Magnum Shorty

Gday Lads!

Hey, I'm in Australia and thinking about ditching my 265 Hemi inline 6 rebuild for a Magnum 360. It's for a 1970 VG Valiant Hardtop, which is basically like a 69 Dodge Dart from behind the lights backwards. Thy come stock with 318s also and a LA360 fits them pretty easily.

What do you dudes think of this short block?

Looks pretty cheap to me. Throw on some Eddy heads and an Airgap manifold and suitable cam, kinda like in this article:

What y'all think? Problems you see?

Thanks heaps for any advice.

JM

Welcome!

I could be wrong but I think the heads are different bewteen the LA and Magnum motors. I know ht eintake mounting holes are different and the rocker setup is different between the two.

Others on here will know better than I though and I'm sure that they will chime in.

Thanks mate.

Just getting a feel for these small blocks. Not a V8 guy yet. But starting to feel that urge...

I've read up a fair bit on the diff between the LA and the Magnum - heads and a few other things that aren't a big problem, from memory. In Aus we have no Magnums - but they seem like a very under-rated motor for street muscle cars. And they should slot right in to where an LA was previously.

Kinda just wanted to know if that ebay deal was a good price for a rebuilt short. Would probably be easier than finding a core here and getting it rebuilt from scratch. With a short I could build it up to 360hp or so pretty easily with some bolt ons and cam change, you think?

A magnum would be a nice engine. I don't know what shipping would be ? Just remember the 360 needs special balancing.

howdy.
I have built my magnum from the ground up in australia. If i had my choise again i wwould go the short block. Rebuilding engines in aussie is very very $$$$
my magnum was stock. i just put a cam, roller rockers, airgap duel plane manifold and 770 carby on it and it is pushing 360hp on the engine dyno.
Lights up the charger nicely.
My next build is the article you have posted. From memory it has less power down low and more up top. Might be because of the single plain manifold.
With the current magnum set up it does just over 13 sec on the quarter mile.
Hope that helps.
cheers
if you import the motor i can suggest someone to do it for you.
here is it running with the small cam

Gday Maca. Thanks for your insights mate.
Have seen a bit of your build on the MM, and that motor sounds sweet!

Was talking to someone the other day and they said a similar thing, but they said "just get a US builder to put together your whole engine, get it running, and when it's sorted get it shipped over all together". Kinda makes sense, they can put together magnums over there with their eyes shut! And have some great engine building shops. Would save on parts shipping if it's all put together first.

Anyway, I've pulled the Hemi 6 out and got it on the engine stand ready to put together, and forgot how much stuff I already had sorted for it - should do 300HP pretty easily. So will run with that for now, until the thirst for power takes over and I need a magnum stroker upgrade!
