Compatabilty '84 W150 360-LA/A-727/208
Just got me a truck - Dodge W150 I believe its a 1984, 4x4 model. Its a 5.9L (360ci-LA), TF A727 automatic transmission, 208 TC. The rig is well rusted and has body damage. What I would like to do is buy a spare 360/727/208 and rebuild them, to keep the down time to a minimum, and easy swapping. For the engine, am I correct in thinking any 360 from 1971 onward is good. Or should I look to see if its a 360-LA. If I need to do that, how do I know the difference, or are all 360's the same off a truck/van regardless of whether its a 2wd or 4wd. I guess the same question goes for the 727 and 208 TC. Are there any compatability sites on the internet. I have done alot of surfing the web. And I can't really find what I am looking for, in terms of the parts. I guess I will keep searching for helpful forums like this one. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Im pretty sure any 360 "pre-magnum" will suit your needs. There were no considerable emissions/computeraztion in 84 that are essential for operation. I yanked the stock intake carb and replaced w/650 4bbl holly and edelbrock intake and comleatly did away with the A.I.R. and E.G.R. Runs like a champ! Same w/the trans and tc. Year shouldn't be an issue, shop for pre-magnum era (Prior 94) parts.Let me know how you come out!

All the 360's were called LA 360...1971--1993....The best heads were around 1988-89 and newer I believe..(swirl types) I pulled my 360 from my 87 4x4 Dodge..Typical...they all have cast cranks and externally balanced...The main thing is they all had 8:1 pistons which with the dish in them were closer to 7:5 :1 ...Wake it up with some low cost flat top hyper utectics...and shave the heads .050-.060 on the pre swirl heads....run a Comp xe cam, headers and dual exhaust, thermoquad intake..carter avs or afb.......You will pick up torque and gas mileage....run 89-92 gas...I was getting 17-18 mpg..otherwise the engine is a pooch and their worst balanced motor....They went cheap building them. Speaking from direct experience...I eventually took mine out for a 440...same type of build...i still get 16mpg..and a boat load more low end torque..
