I have recently installed my own electronic ignition setup on my 68 charger 440. The wiring diagram I used is below. I am able to start and run the car fine and have a kill switch to shut the car off. The problem I now have is the alternator won`t charge the battery. I`m using a single field alternator and mechanical regulator. I really don`t know how to diagnose this problem. Does my ignition wiring have to be connected to the alternator somehow? I`m new to this btw.

 

Yes.... Add the ???Dark Blue Wire??? To the Switch side and see if that fixes it...

 

A wiring diagram would be helpful. So your saying to add a "Dark blue wire" to the left of the switch and where will that go???

 

Ok. Maybe its not Dark Blue? Maybe its brown on that car.
But what ever wire you have left over... That is going to be the excite wire for your alternator.

When you mean excite wire do you mean connect a wire from the switch to the battery terminal of the alternator? Is it through this wire that the battery charges? Also I currently have two wires coming from the battery terminal of the alternator and was wondering what these are for? The car originally had a Mallory electronic ignition setup but I kinda ditched it since the coil/distributor was no good

 

Anybody???. Also I`m changing the valley pan gasket on my 440. It has an aluminum intake, can someone here just briefly describe how to change it? like where to put the rtv and what torque the bolts need, how to prep the surface, etc. The valley pan hold down bars are also missing from the engine so I'm assuming I need those as well

 

Did you find the Wiring Dia. over on MY MOPAR? It will help a lot if we can get on the same page.
From your question... I think the answer is no.
Everything should already be hooked up. You just lost the one Ignition + wire from the key... Unless I'm missing something?????
The one wire... Coming off the Regulator needs to have switched + to internalize the field of the alternator.

Thats the 3 wire system... you only have 2 wires on the alt.? Rite...
So you will need the older 2 wire...

Yes I only have two wires on the alternator. And are you saying to route a wire from my kill switch to the ignition terminal of the regulator? To send 12 volts directly to the ignition terminal of regulator? I'm already getting switched power at the regulator when I turn the key on inside the car.

I have a separate kill switch btw and using the ignition key inside the car to crank and turn the car on.

 

Ok.. Then if you have switched 12 volt to the voltage regulator. Then that would tell you the Regulator is no good.

To check to see if the alternator is putting out voltage. give the field wire 12 volts at the field term. Start the car and check the voltage at the output wire.
