degreasing/cleaning the engine
degreasing/cleaning the engine
Over the last 37 years my Cordoba's engine has accumulated a lot of grease, dirt, dust and general grime.
Does anyone have any advice on cleaning her? I don't want to damage anything. I have seen video's of someone spraying "Gunk" on an engine and just rinsing it off with a hose. Any experience with that.
As always, thanks for any advice.

Use the Gunk, it works good or any engine degreaser. do it at the car wash as said above, then get you some Spray Nine to finish it off. Clean with the Gunk to get off the worst, then spray it down with the Spray Nine and scrub with a tire brush, it should come out pretty god. If you want it perfect then you will have to spend a lot of time with a cleaner, brush, plenty of rags and a lot of elbow grease. Good luck.

Back in the 80's I used to live on "GUNK".
Yes, it works if you follow the directions and cover the carb, distributor, etc.
I kinda liked the smell...
That might be your first pass for a really bad engine bay.
Wire and nylon bristle bushes may be necessary.
Purple Super Cleaner also works well, but may take a little more elbow grease and is more of a "localized" cleaner.
After the grease is gone, don't be surprised, you you find you have to repaint/touch up the engine/bay.

I just had a thread exactly similar to this on another Mopar forum a few days ago asking about indusrtial strength Purple Power, which can be purchased at any local parts store.
Stuff works great with very little elbow grease. Spray on, let set for 45 minutes but do not allow to dry, and then just hose off.
The bottom half of my engine is almost clean enough to eat off from now as are the 2 big oil spots I had on my driveway!
Stuff didn't hurt spark plug wires but was warned in other forum about not letting it get in your starter or alternator.
In full strength mode, it is advisable to not let get on paint or chrome.

I just use a pressure washer. and if it real greasy you can use Dawn dish detergent if its safe enough for oil soaked ducks and water foul after an oil spill then its good enough for my baby.. It works good and rinses clean..Bill

On a fairly clean engine, I might've used dish detergent, but mine was caked and gunked.
