Need a quite 383 muffler
I have a problem. My 1969 383 B-body Belvedere/Satellite was overheating at higher highway speeds last year and it was suggested I needed a bigger exhaust than the 2 in pipe and off the muffler store shelf mufflers that it had on it. So I went with a 2 1/2 pipe and master flow 70 series mufflers. It was way to loud. So I added a 26 in. glass pack ahead of the mufflers. Still to loud.
Now before anyone jumps me about it needing some noise the deal is this is on my Adam-12 replica LAPD car. It can't sound like a hot rod. If I loose some HP that's OK. I just need it to breath and be quite. What muffler can I use?? Thanks.

Try walker mufflers and resonators i think they are like the factory type mufflers mopar used back in the day very quiet [stock] sounding, with good flow. I personally like the louder the better, but with your vehicle it requires stealthy sounds.

HI,my 383 also ran a bit warm, so I had to put in a new aluminium radiator. And now it's running at 180 degrees. So if it's a heat problem or a sound problem, Well you decide. My copper radiator did not dissipate the heat fast enough.

Thanks Tim. When I rebuilt the motor 5,000 miles ago I installed a high flow water pump, new housing, the best thermostat I could get (180), new hoses, new 3 core aluminum radiator with a 18in elec. puller fan (with thermostat and manual toggle switch) and a new 13 pound cap. So that's why I was so surprised at the overheating at high speeds.
I only had 2 1/4 in pipe and off the shelf mufflers from a mufflerman/Lents type place and that was 3 years ago. I get a lot of condensation at start up so the thought was the mufflers are blocking a little probably because of some corrosion in the mufflers and that the pipe is to small. Even though the stock exhaust came in that size pipe I believe. So again the thought is the motor can't get rid of enough exhaust at high speeds so the engine is retaining it which is making it over heat at the higher speeds.
I got these new Walker 21548 mufflers yesterday from Summits and I'm hoping to get them put on Tuesday. They will be replacing the new Master-flow 70 series I just put on 15 miles ago. If you know of anyone looking for a set of those let me know. BIG mufflers! In my 15 miles of test driving I have NOT had any kind of overheating even in 90+ degrees temps. so the theory I think was correct.
Thanks again for the input. I really appreciate it.

Sounds great,I didn't know you had gone that far with it yet. Sounds awesome. I too have a great deal of condensation at start-up.Maybe I need bigger mufflers or high flow.I have Flowmasters on my original factory "H" pipe now and I (unlike what you wanted) don't mind a little sound off the back of my '68 RR 383 auto. Thanks I talk to some more people about that.

There is no such thing as too loud!
I am running a pair of pipes through small cherry bombs!
If I could I would not run anything but pipes!
Of course to make up for that I have to run a pair of 12" subwoofers and a 2500 watt amp

I'm not sure how they sound but Hooker max flow mufflers flow just as good as a 2.5" straight pipe. Might be something to look into if you do want a little rumble.

Put the Walker mufflers on today and they are a lot better then it was. I can live with the amount of rumble it has. For now ; ) Thanks again for the help.

Steve Koning of Konings Kustoms did the body and paint. Little shop..BIG talent. Jamestown, MI near Grand Rapids. 616-896-8005. His brother Luke does all the welding which is ADT welding in the same shop. Damn good work and even better prices. I couldn't be happier with them.
