1971 Chrysler Newport 383. Randomly shuts down

Hello everyone.

I am am new to the forum and despertly need some help and advice

i purchased a 1971 Chrysler Newport with the original 383 in it. The carb is a 2bbl carter. The car is stock with the exception of the distributor being upgraded to an electronic system (by the previous owner)

last summer the car started to randomly shut off. It sometimes happens when itís parked and idling, Sometimes when it is in gear and idling, and sometimes when it is moving. The shut down is very quick and clean. (As if someone turned the key off). There is no spitting or sputtering durning the shut down which leads me to lean away from a fuel issue. It hard to start again after it shuts down. It is to a point now where I am scared to drive the car. The car is stored during the winter. It is a summer driver only.

I have done the following work trying to solve the issue
-new rebuilt carb. (Old one was shot)
-new spark plugs
-new fuel filter
-new air filter
-new vacuum hoses for any hose that connected to the carb or distributor
-reset timing
-set air/fuel mixture
-set low and high idle

parts that were replaced in the last 3-5 years
-new 3 core rad
-new fuel pump
-upgraded to electronic ignition distributor
-new distributor, cap, and rotor
-new spark plugs wires

I appricate any suggestions on what to try or test next

please let me know if I need to provide any further information

thank you and have a great day

Travis

Try a new ECU and make sure the ground for the new box is cleaned with sand paper... Got to have a good ground.... Just my 2 cents...

Good morning,

I wanted to check back in and let you know that, although it was a pain to find the right one, a new ECU did fix the issue. Also upon further inspection of the old ECU I could see where it was arcing from the back of the unit to the firewall. Don't worry I made damn well sure the new one is grounded properly.

Have a great day :-)
