LOWERING MY 68 FURY
Hi from sunny England.
I'm building a 68 Fury Convertable and I want to lower it.
I know that it's a simple case of turning the big bolt on the lower control arm but I'd like to know how much is possible just by this method.
Problem is that the car is up on blocks being painted in a booth and I'd like to order up some lowering blocks for the rear leafs so that they arrive in the UK by the time the car is out of paint.
I don't wanna order 3 inch blocks for the rear if I can only lower the front by 2 inches.
Anyone know what the max I can go is...........????

It's a matter of taste, but the majority of the modified car hobby thinks lowering looks good. What aftermarket spring manufacturer doesn't sell lowering springs/blocks/etc. Heck, that's why Pontiac factory lowered the Firebird 1 1/2 inches over it's sister Camaro.
Lower the car if it's what you want - lots of us think it'll look just fine.

Its a matter of taste, ive seen standard height cars i like, same as ive seen low and high cars i like. Dont sweat it.

Thanks for your comments Grabber Orange and Stinkwheel.
KJoe,
You're the one being funny here. You have a lot of nerve making comment like that to someone you don't know.
If you want to be a chalk mark chaser, fine. Don't call my car crap. Are you going to call Grabber's car crap too because he's changed the wheels???
.................I'll thank you to keep your narrow minded, uninformed comment to yourself. OK?

KZjoeZ61, i understand freedom of speech, i also understand being reasonably pleasant to people when they have expressed their right to freedom of speech. This guy has said he wants to lower his car. Your initial reply was a bit aggressive and arrogant (you are allowed to be aggressive and arrogant if you want as you say, but its not the best way to greet folks and make friends) Now i think i was pleasant back at you by saying that some people like to express their own tastes and lowering is seen as a good thing by many. I assume we're all supposed to be friends here with a shared interest right? So why heavy handed in the first place, i think maybe saying something like " i dont like lowered cars and would leave it at stock height" would have been fairer to everyone all round. i dunno.
Sorry to go on about it and sorry to hi-jack this thread slightly, but it doesnt cost anything to be nice, we all have bad days but you dont need to jump down peoples throats when they use their right to freedom of speech and just so you know this, we in the UK also have a similar freedom of speech law, its just we dont quote it everytime we feel the need to be rude to someone.

Raindance had a very valid question, it's his car allow him to do what he wants to it. And unless your flipping the bills no one has any right to say otherwise.
As for lowering, have you looked at a lowrider site? they'd have ore info on how to do it correctly! And isn't it possible to lower the front by cutting down the spring?
And like polardude said, Behave!

Guys, I'm not looking for any trouble here.
This is a hobby to me and this means it's FOR PLEASURE.
I'm all for playing nice.
I was just hoping to speak to folks with a similar interest, get a little advice and maybe make an online friend or two.
I did not expect some complete stranger to flip out just because I want to individualise my toy. I appreciate you other guys seeing things a little from my point of view.
You're right, Mr KJoe, we in the West have the freedom to have an opinion and in my opinion you're a nut and a rude, aggressive one at that.
I can appreciate the idea behind owning a car which is as it was built, especially the low mileage, cherry survivors. That would be sacrilage to butcher one of those. Thing is many modified cars are ones that might well have gone to the crusher long ago and have been saved by enthusiasts. Would you rather these cars still be on the road or be the next generation of refrigerators???
I'm not trying to build a lowrider as such. I just want to drop the car a couple of inches so that it sits a little better on the wheels. As I mentioned, I'm not doing anything that can't be changed back to factory. I feel this will enhance the looks and useability of my ride while making small improvements. Just because a car was built a certain way doesn't mean it can't be improved. The factory doesn't always get it right and sometimes makes changes to models anyway.
I'm simply improving (in my opinion) on an already good design.
As for lowering the car, I already know how, thanks '64 Fury. It's a simple matter of cranking down the torsion bars fitted to my 68. I was trying to get info in advance from somebody who had lowered a torsion bar MoPar about what kind of drop was possible without hacking anything about.

Administrator with a large ban hammer !
Measure the distance between the control arm and the rubber snubber, and that will be the number you are looking for. In reality, you can pretty much remove all the unsprung weight from the torsion bars, but the ride quality will suffer greatly. Ask all the questions you want, someone here WILL have the answer.

That may indicate an issue with the rear springs, they may be sagging. May want to look at the rear first before you go adjusting something that may be perfectly alright!

Stinkwheel, a bit of UK knowledge:
While I'm sure that our US buddies would no doubt just go to the parts store and spring for a new pair of leafs, it's often time consuming and expensive to order parts like these from the States -though Rock Auto do offer a very good service.
An alternative might be to whip those sagging leafs off and get them re-tempered. There are a couple of spring specialists that I'm aware of in my own region and I'm sure that there are a few near you in the industrial midlands............
Just a thought,
mate.

Whaaaat..????
I thought ALL Americans were rich
In comparison, parts for what Americans call domestic are cheap and easily available. In the UK and many other parts of the world, American vehicles are regarded as specialist vehicles and all parts seem to carry a premium price tag (read "costs more than it oughta") and you can't simply swing by your local Auto Zone on the way from work for even the most basic service items. I'm always amazed (and jealous) how easy and cheap it is to buy parts in the US when I'm there.
It costs 2 or 3 times as much to buy many parts in the UK as compared to the US, so many components are rebuilt or re-used over here when it wouldn't make financial sense to do so in the US.
And don't even get me started on the price of gas here..............

im waaaay ahead of you on the re-tempered springs mate already spoken to a chap about it here As for parts availability and price, your spot on, things for american cars here are waaay to expensive for what they are. Hence me ordering a tail light from US e-bay and having it shipped.
And gas prices, hahahahahahahahahahaha.

Thought you might be mate as you seem to have your head screwed on right. At the same time, I'm always trying to help out where I can and it simply wouldn't have been cricket not to mention re-tempering if you hadn't been aware of it.................
