61 station wagon help!!

Long story short. Got this station wagon for free from a family friend. It has the 318 with pushbutton. My question is...will a newer 318 bolt up to this trans?? The reason im askin is because the 318 in it now is huge compared to a newer one. Thanks in advance!!

The 318 Polysphere is a good engine. It is basicly a Semi Hemi. That is why it is larger than a 318LA. The down side is there are not alot of aftermarket performance parts for one. Unless your going to race it, Id leave it as is. There are multi Carb manifolds and stuff out there if you watch Ebay ect. Offy makes some stuff for them I believe.

Well the lady told me it burned about a quart of oil a day lol so id rather pull it and put a newer 318 in and rebuild this one for my 40 dodge rat rod.

I could be wrong but I think the trans bolt pattern is different.

The poly and the LA have different bell housing patterns, and do not interchange.

Nice rides both. I would run that wagon just the way it sits, body wise. Maybe wide white walls on red rims with chrome lugs and a center cap. I like the patina and being as you are building a rat rod I guess you do too. You should be able to find a 318 or better a 360 with the trans for little investment. There is a company called Imperial Conversions that sell kits to install newer trannies in cable shift cars wich is what the push button is. I hear they are not cheap. Being as you already have the cable shift trans you might be able to fab up something to make it work. maybe swap valve bodies(?) In any event good luck and have fun.

ill prolly just end up putting a newer 318 or 360 and trans in it. Along with a better rear end. and some disks up front would be nice. that old poly will prolly end up in the rat! Heard you can put hemi heads on it. How much work would that take?

Station wagons are mainly boring, almost as bad as minivans. However, numerous car corporations are coming out with sporty wagons. Hot station wagons and “shooting brakes,” essentially the exact same thing, are starting to get really popular. A personal loan will help you pay for your car payment this month.

318 swap

I'm not so sure thats true. A friend just swapped a 360 into a 64 Dodge using the 64 cable trans. The original engine was a poly 318 which should have the same pattern as the 60 poly 318...
Ya need to check a little further, I always thought the poly 318 and later LA engines would interchange.

[QUOTE=benjoM;89807]Station wagons are mainly boring,

Well...... your sure entitled to your opinion..... But station wagons, espically vintage wagons, have more character then most anything other then a convertible. My guess is you've not been around an old wagon much. Stop and take a gook look at one sometime, It dosen't make much difference what kind. The fun is only limited to your imagination.
