85 D150 Brake question

Question 85 D150 Brake question

Hey all,
I got the D150 running smooth as glass, at factory specs but i have alot of play in the front calipers. When i hit bumps in the road you can hear the calipers clanging. After removing the wheel you can see where the caliper is tagging the inside of the rim. I replaced the upper and lower hold downs, no pins but the rectangle meatal style, but i dont know if this noise is norman for this type of caliper or if i am missing something. The hold downs came with 4 rubber band like thing and i dont know what they are for. Any input would be helpful

Can you post a pic of what you are talking about? I thought that they were bolt in calipers (probably wrong though). It does sounds like something is missing though.

Similar noise on my 95. Pins were tight, but the sleeves and the rubbers were worn out. Any problem with an inside/outside pad wearing faster than the other? X2 on pix.

They should not be hitting your wheels, that is for sure. I would start looking for worn out mounting hardware/parts.

I ALWAYS THOUGHT ON THE OLDER PICKUPS THE CALIPERS WERE PINNED BUT I MIGHT BE WRONG I AGREE WITH EVERYONE ELSE NEED PICS.

'84 D 150 will have "sliding calipers" . The noise you are hearing is probably the brake pads. You must bend the tab on the pad to take up any play. ( with the bottom of the pad resting on something solid like a vice, tap the tab down,all the while test fitting the pad to the caliper. When the adjustment is right the pad will kind-of snap into place. If you go too far you just got to tap the tab the other way. The whole idea is to get the outer pad to fit as tight as possible). rubber band looking things are probably "o-rings" for the pistons in the calipers. Also remember to replace the retainer springs on the caliper. Make sure it is installed correctly. Installed correctly, it should apply pressure to the pad/caliper. You can also put some the anti rattle stuff (?) on the back of the pads. DOnt know why the calipers would be hitting the wheel if you have the original wheels, but if this is the case, then you have some serious problems.
