Check engine light on? If so, what codes are being thrown? could be a clogged cat blocking the down stream O2 sensor, could be a stuck open injector(s), bad plugs and/or coil pack, etc.

How do you know its running really rich?

The most common problem with the 4.7 L engine is they drop valve seats causing the engine to run rich & skip.Is it skipping? Do a compression test. The rich running happens when it drops the intake seat. The head will have to be replaced or rebuilt. But sometimes they cant even do that. The new heads from Chyrsler are not as bad as you would think because they know they have a problem so they feel they should be reasonably priced. What Tim said is also very valid too. Keep us posted..

Thumbs down

you got too be kidding me!
they drop their valve seats!
fricken engineers can't make anything today that lasts!
Making it cheaper makes it weaker.

Almost as bad as the 2.7 THERE is no reason they can't make an engine to last 250K miles

If it is pushing off the rockers that is what they do if the seat falls off the head. It holds the valve open the rocker is then real loose and it falls off. Sometimes the seat will find its way back into place but doesnt last long. It ends up beating the head to death and the core is ruined thus causing the customer/person to buy a new head and thats why the cost is reasonable because chrysler knows they have a problem. We were doing them under warranty even. I believe the new heads have the seats staked in now.

Have it checked for codes! It would be alot easier to help you if we had all the facts. A vacuum leak would make a rough idle and should be easy to find.

SYMPTOM
P0440 - GENERAL EVAP SYSTEM FAILURE

WHEN MONITORED
Engine Running. Fuel Level greater than 12%. Ambient Temperature between 4 °C and 32 °C (39 °F and 89 °F) .

SET CONDITION
The PCM does not see the NVLD switch close during the medium/large leak test. The PCM then will increase the vacuum supply to the EVAP system by increasing flow through the EVAP Purge valve. If the switch does not close with an increase in vacuum an error is detected. Two Trip Fault. Three good trips to turn off the MIL.

POSSIBLE CAUSES
  • EVAP PURGE SOLENOID VACUUM SUPPLY
  • (Z938) GROUND CIRCUIT OPEN
  • (K107) NVLD SWITCH SIGNAL CIRCUIT OPEN
  • EVAPORATIVE EMISSION LEAK DETECTION
  • NVLD ASSEMBLY
  • EVAP PURGE SOLENOID
  • PCM
Always perform the Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting procedure before proceeding
