You have the "Bigger is better" deal going on.

Bigger is NOT better.

Sounds like you have too much gearing, and too much carb for it.

you could be reving the motor out very quickly, as blue 68 gts said, you may have too much gearing

well now wait...... I don't think that a 600 is too big for a small block. I have put an edelbrock 600 on an amc 360 motor with just an intake and it runs fine.

First off, the gearing is way to high. You need to go back to the 3.23 gears and install a mini spool unless you are a really good welder. The only reason why I say this it because the welds on teh spider gears can crack and break if they do not penatrate competely.

Secondly, When you pull the motor to do the cam, change out the clutch for a high performance clutch. The one that you have now may be slipping too much. You'll need one that has more holding power.

Third, You need to tune the carb properly other wise it will sound like its running right but it may be dumping in too little gas.

I dont think Rulito is here anymore as this post is over a year old but its a good thread but as 78 says the 600 is just about right on a small stock motor , my 72 340 stock had the 750 thermo on it and it was fine never had any problems , im also leaning towards him welding his rear together as one might get to much drag from it that way//// also maybe didn't do it right at the line
