You would be better off pulling the 318 for a 360 rather than spending the money on machining the 318. They are can had for pretty cheap plus parts are cheap and they are easy to build.

As for the rear end it could be a 7 1/4.

as 78 says its way less to build a 360 then to make your 318 perform into the 12's you would have to do alot to get it there in that bracket

If you're looking to put more under the hood either with a 318 build or a 360 swap, I'd suggest replacing the 904 with a 727. You will also probably need to have a new driveshaft made for it as the two transmissions are different lenghts.

The 904 is a good tranny for stock to mild built engines (intake, carb and exhuast). You can build up the 904 but it is cheaper, and a better deal, to buy a 727 as they can be built stronger and better for less money due to the fact that they are everywhere. They are equal to a TH400 tranny.

Once again, I wouldn't waste my money on machine work for a 318, they are just not worth it. If you want to install an intake, carb, headers, dizzy, then thats fine because all of those parts will fit onto a 360. You can then look for a 360 while you having fun with the mildly built 318. When you find one, install a larger cam, get some machine work done, then swap over the carb, intake, headers, dizzy, etc from teh 318 to the 360. While your at it, find and rebuild a 727 or buy a TCI street fighter with a stall convertor, I'd say somewhere around 2300 RPM since you will still want to be able to drive it on the road.

you'll have to upgrade the rear axle as well then and the gearing. I'd look for a D60 5 lug or 8 3/4, install posi and look into going with about a 3.73 to 4.10 gears. Match that up with a goo set of wide tires in the back and you will probably have a mid 13s to mid 14s car.
