440 9.6 compression economy cam
I have a 440motor home with speed pro 67 71 pistons 8.7 with 906 or 452 or 9.2 with 516 I think, the motorhome heads had sunk valves so I bought 75 cc e street so maybe 9.6 with almost full point gain because of 75cc.. now this is going into a 51 dodge business coupe 3200 lbs with 440 and 323 gear and motorhome 727 with larger 12 inch converter. I have xe256 cam and lifters new, also the motorhome cam 260 268 34 overlap, also a 256 260 34 overlap cam out of a 68 383 2 barrel. My question for an economy build, in Canada $900 a gallon, and 91 octane max, would these cams be safe at this compression or would a slightly larger or maybe smaller be in order. Or another suggestion camshaft. I think a stock 440 in a 3200 lbs car would be scary. Thanks ahead of time, Vaughn in Nova Scotia

I've tried numerous cams and my favorite for the 383/440 is the stock cam for the magnum engines. It has a 268/284 duration with 450/458 lift. Sweet power, response and idle. Chrysler engineers knew what they were doing. You'd be fine with this cam. The Dart 383 is a bit smaller it has 431"/.443" lift with 256/260 duration. They wanted the Dart to be slower in the 1/4 than the Road Runner. Sales thing.

Will look at that one or something that’s very close, the aluminum heads help with detonation but our, Canada, lower octane, worries me, so yes more duration will help thanks for reply

The cams you mentioned are fine, and at 9.6:1, frankly with a little tweaking, may not even need 91 octane.

Good to know that the cams I have would be allright, On another forum a guy questioned his pick of the xe256 in a mopar 383 non hp and was shocked at its performance and instant reaction to right foot input. up to 4500rpm. Thanks again for the reply

Good dynamic compression with the aluminum heads you should not have a problem with detonation, just play with your timing curve and total timing to see what works best with what fuel…

Have that cam in a 76 Monte with a 305, good torque and carries it past 4000, funny thing,I had changed the heads to sr torques for 305 and put cam 204. 214 and it was a dog below 2000 but was an animal from 2500 up past 5000 rpm, low compression I guess and wrong cam, but I am still shocked at how it pulled in mid and upper, now the 206 206 gives good bottom end and seems to hold the same torque into mid range but I’m sure that Ry cam was at least 60 or 70 foot lbs above in mid. Will look at it, thanks

Great thanks, was reading a dyno on jalopy journal and iq52 had his fathers engine, a 8.9 compression 440 with pocket ported 452 and a 260h which is a step above the 252 which is I believe the 206 206 is, and made 402hp and 485 foot lbs. now that’s where I’m thinking, the xe256 will work and the stock cam that’s in it, 260 268 will work, the suggestions I have gotten are all around these so ,it’s good thanks

Not Sure if your going carbureted or EFI..... But my Guess-T-Mate on your fuel mileage. that is what we were talking about? i thought?

Yes at 9 bucks a gallon economy is paramount, going to be carbureted with 670 avenger or I also have a seized thermoquad, so stock intake or an aluminum equivalent will work. Again thanks for reply and thoughts
