1966 satellite as first car?

Hi everyone, I was looking around for a first car on craigslist and came across this 1966 satellite. I don't really know much about mopars and was just wondering if this is a well made car. I know it may not be the best first car because I'm assuming the 440 get poor gas mileage, but I really like old cars like these because of the styling and power you can't find in newer cars. So, basically what I am wondering if this is a somewhat reliable car, if it looks like a good deal, and about how many hp/lbft does this car make? Any help is much appreciated.

I feel the need for caution. "First car" implies that you may be young and with not much experience. Trying to own, operate, REPAIR and FIND PARTS for what is getting to be a pretty old car can be a daunting and expensive task.

Additionally, if you are young enough that you are still in school or don't have much of a career going yet, you will soon find that you are doing nothing but "working for your car."

Having said that, if the body is in good enough condition that it doesn't need too much to make a "daily driver" out of it, the drivetrains for these cars can be substituted and slightly modified up into the 80's sometimes.

For example, a small or big block out of a late 70's pickup (2x4) or van will drop in there without much trouble.

Wiring in these old girls can be a little problem. If you tear the wiring down and actually fix --or rewire-- so as to eliminate the problems, rather than constantly patching and "enjoying the headache", you can get around that part of the thing.

I actually live in Tampa, this is pretty much right down the road from me. I spent over 7k and went through 3 cars trying to find the right body for my 440-727 driveline, which doesnt make me an expert but I will tell you that if I had done my homework and checked out specific areas that these cars are prone to for rust and frame damage, etc... I could of saved a TON of $$$ and time. I would be willing to look it over for you, I love these old cars and had a 69 satellite so I know it a bit. Plus I just want to check it out for myself anyways....

X2 on what 440 said. I'm 19 and I have 3 cars and a pickup. I most of my money goes to my cars and I'm still not very far on my Road Runner even though I've had it for almost 4 years now. I've just been working on the other 2 and my pickup in the process. 2 of my cars are restored and I still have issues with them. You really have to know what you are doing to keep old cars happy.

This car is very nice and clean.
It has a 440 engine w/4brl carb.
There's no ding/dents, body is very sound.
No cracked glass.
No hard rusted out spots.
Does need a new paint job, the clear coating is coming off.

I can be contacted between 7am and 6pm Mon - Sun

I'm 19, and my dart was my first car. CONSTANTLY pouring work and money into it. But, its big, old, and beautiful. I drive it everywhere, and will keep driving it till it won't drive no more. If you're a little handy, and willing to learn, go for it!

thanks for the help everyone. I'm going to be doing online classes from home next semester so that is going to leave me with a lot of extra time to work and earn more money to put into a car. Also, does anyone know the horsepower and lbft for a satellite with a 440 as well as the mpg?

If it is a stock 440HP it would be 375 HP @ 4600 RPM and 480 FT LBS @ 3200 RPM prob 12 MPG at best

Thanks again for the answers. Is this a fair price for this car or could it be talked down a little?

Take a magnet with you. Check for sgns of body filler in the typical rust areas.

Welcome!

That's a pretty good price for a car that appears to be in pretty good shape. Make sure to look it over carefully.
