318 beef up

318 beef up

I have a 318 and want to beef it up with a cam intake manifold and carb I have a 904 trans... any suggestions would be great!

I did that in the late 1970's. 340 heads, Crane cam, headers, Edelbrock intake and TQ carb. Remarkably snappy engine (in a 4200 pound car). The 904 will hold, but getting a 727 (and possibly a looser converter) would be a better idea for street use. Also, knowing what your rear gears are will factor in.

If you are doing the work yourself, I'd start slow to get your feet wet. Do the intake and carb first. It will be mismatched with the rest of the engine, but you'll get your hands dirty. If the engine is out of the car, then you might as well do the whole thing, if budget permits.
