OK, here we GO! I just recently purchased a 1978 Dodge Diplomat to use as a demo this year at my local track! NOW, I don't usually u s e these for demo purposes a n d, do not know a w h o l e HELLUVA lot about them BUT, a friend of mine that does, says that they are THEE Best......seeing as tho he uses them ALL the time, I'm gonna take his word for it?! My question is this: The car has been sitting for about a year and, when I try to start it, it warms up, then dies out after 10 - 15 minutes a n d, the choke on the 2bbl gets stuck open?! Should I replace the 2bbl with a New one a n d, get rid of the lean-burn system OR, is that NOT the problem?!

 

The 2 barrel probably just needs a good cleaning. I would pull if off, soak it in some denatured alcohol (I think or miniral sprits) then scrub it down.

As for the stalling, I'm not sure. You can get rid of the lean burn system on it and see how it reacts. When removing, becareful as you might need to put it back on.

I would get rid of the lean burn and use an older stock electronic distributor. The carb might work but probably not that well. Better off using the oldest simplest carb you can get your hands on, and rebuild it. Make it as simple as possible. Being as you plan to demo it, I would strip out anything that does not make it go, dash, seats, wiring, of course glass and trim, the whole bit. Might be able to recoupe some of your investment. It will also need to start well when hot so a complete tune is in order. The less advance the better for hard starting situations. You don't need maximum power but reliable running and ease of starting when hot. Use a floor shifter even if you gotta make one out of threaded rod, as colisions can bind the shifting mechanisim, and the neutral saftey switch could be bypassed altogether. Won't hurt to start in gear if you gotta move right away. Just keep this in mind as it can cause severe injury if you forget at the wrong time. Might want to put it on a toggle switch in the dash along with your ignition switch and starter button. use a tranny cooler, and mount in the back seat area if you can. Anything up front is gonna get smashed. You don't want your tranny over heating but the motor can take alot. Actually runs better right up untill it blows. Run with out a thermostat. use big snow tires on a mud track. Don't worry about flats. They can get better traction in muddy enviroments.
As for the stalling I would be looking for a vacuum leak.
You won't need a choke at all.
