Question on 73 Plymouth duster distributor

I’ve been watching different videos on guys installing distributors and they’re all different. My question is , when finding top dead center does the distributor have to be inside, and when dead center is found does the rotor on the base of the distributor have to be facing #1 cylinder , or it doesn’t matter , as long as the cap and wires or hooked up to the fire order . Like I mentioned many guys have said it’s knportant to line up the rotor and have that way . It’s a 73 duster with 318 engine .

Top dead center

Thanks for the video, appreciate it !
Few questions though , am I supposed to drop in the distributor at 0 ; because when I do so the distributor rotor does not line up to the front towards the number one cylinder . Or am I suppose to adjust the timing to 10-15 degrees after top dead center ?

It will start easier with 10-15 degrees before TDC.

Awesome. So crank or adjust to 0 then move to 15 before tdc then drop in the distributor, correct ?

If you haven't pulled the oilpump drive with the cam gear drive all you need to do is set the distributor in it will be a half turn off or right on. Theres no need to rotate the motor with the distributor out, normally you would have noticed were the rotor was pointing when you pulled the old distributor and set the new to the same location.
