transmission problem

I have a 2004 dodge intrepid with a 2,7 motor and auto trans

Sometimes when driving on the highway the transmision will not shift into the last gear,,, Any suggestions? The local auto parts store mentioned a speed sensor.

Could be that you just need a tranny flush.

I can understand why the parts store would say that it is a speed sensor if the tranny is determining which gear to be in based on your speed.

Is your "check engine" light on?

I would get that code fixed first and then go from there.

If you pull the tranny dip stick and look at the oil while it is running in it's either park or netrual (it'll say on the dip stick), you can see at what level it is at and what color it is. The fluid should look red if it is still good. If it is brown and/or smells burns, then have a flush done.

Which trans is that? there are DOZENS of things that can cause that. I have some good links if it is the 41TE. Do you mean 3rd gear or overdrive? Heck....do you even have first gear? You could be in "limp-mode" and not even know it. You would just have 2nd and 3rd.

2004 intrepid trans problem

I found out that the solenoid block of the transmission that controls the shifting needs replaced. This is a common problem and my symptoms were the car not going past 3rd when car was run for a while. Usually downshifts hard when coming to a stop then wont shift into overdrive (after about 25 min of driving.) They sell this item on ebay for about $80 . Hope this helps someone else.
