Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1

CONCORD, N.C. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, Fourth annual O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: Bob Gilbertson No Time, Now #1
5:36 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 63 degrees, relative humidity 49 percent, barometer 29.58 inches, adjusted altitude 1,139 feet, track temperature 79 degrees.
Gilbertson hits the throttle, gets about 100 feet out and backs off the throttle. Word from the track, the steering wheel came off in his hands.
Left Lane: John Smith Runs 4.208/289.94, Now #1
Right Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 9.543/64.68, Now #2
Troxel has problems early in the run and clicks it off. Smith goes right down the groove and makes a decent pass.
Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.132/301.54, Now #2
Right Lane: Paul Lee Runs 4.118/309.49, Now #1
Lee keeps the candles lit all the way through the run and makes his quickest pass of the year to take the early pole. head makes a decent run and gets in the two spot for now.
Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.167/294.11, Now #4
Right Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.087/312.78, Now #1
Two more clean, straight passes. Gray makes a decent pass, the fastest of his career, and he gets in the top spot for now.
Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 7.189/104.54, Now #7
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.106/310.63, Now #2
Wilkerson has problems right off the line and the car noses over. Arend makes a clean pass and gets in the show in the second spot for now.
Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.059/311.41, Now #1
Right Lane: John Force Runs 6.718/96.94, Now #8
Force rattles the tires off the line, pedals a couple of times, then gives up on the run. Tasca goes right down the groove and takes the pole for now.
Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.055/314.39, Now #1
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 7.057/84.93, Now #10
Capps hits the throttle, gets about 200 feet out and rattles the tires. Hagan goes right down the groove and moves into the top spot.
Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.538/185.92, Now #9
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 7.571/88.25, Now #13
Hight gets about 300 feet out and loses traction. Pedregon gets about 600 feet out, rattles the tires and has to click it off.

Right Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.451/186.59, Now #9
Beckman gets about 400 feet out and has to back off the throttle. Neff made it a little further, loses traction and gives up on the run.

Left Lane: Bob Gilbertson No Time, Now #17; No Prior Run
Gilbertson fired the engine, discovered a fuel leak and had to shut down.
Left Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 4.049/308.85, Now #1; Best prior run: 9.543/64.68, Was #16
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.108/305.84, Now #6; Best prior run: 7.189/104.54, Was #14
Troxel makes an impressive run, her quickest of the year, and she moves to the top of the order. Wilkerson goes right down the groove and gets in the top half of the field in the sixth spot.
Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.060/314.90, Now #5; Best prior run: 7.571/88.25, Was #16

Beckman makes a great run here, right down the groove with his quickest pass of the year and the fastest Funny Car run ever to take the top spot. Hight goes right down the groove and moves all the way to the fifth spot.

CONCORD, N.C. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, Fourth annual O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Bob Gilbertson Runs 5.682/214.86, Now #13; No Prior Run
12:52 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 67 degrees, relative humidity 60 percent, barometer 29.62 inches, adjusted altitude 1,475 feet, track temperature 79 degrees.
Gilbertson has had his share of problems this weekend. The steering wheel came off in his hands on his first attempt, then he had to shut down before he could make a pass because of a fuel leak on his second attempt.
He gets down the track on this one but still had problems. The car makes a move to the left at the hit, then he strikes the tires about 300 feet out. He pedals, backs off the throttle, then gets back on it a little past half track.

Right Lane: Paul Lee Runs 5.361/137.08, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.118/309.49, Was #10
Smith made a decent pass yesterday, just not quick enough to get in the top twelve. Lee made his quickest pass of the year and is in the tenth spot right now.

Both Force and Pedregon have had traction problems all weekend. Neither driver has made a full pass.

He was on a really great run but green flames started coming from the headers about 700 feet out, then a fire developed underneath the car. The car is smoking pretty heavily just as he goes through the lights, then the Safety Safari has to roll to put out the flames.
Neff went up in smoke about 300 feet out.

Gilbertson goes up in smoke at the hit and clicks it off. Pedregon goes right down the groove with his quickest pass of the weekend to get off the bump and into the ninth spot.

Left Lane: Bob Gilbertson No Time, Now #17; Best prior run: 5.682/214.86, Was #17
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.084/292.27, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.186/141.77, Was #16
3:38 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 69 degrees, relative humidity 59 percent, barometer 29.58 inches, adjusted altitude 1,665 feet, track temperature 78 degrees.
Gilbertson goes up in smoke at the hit and clicks it off. Pedregon goes right down the groove with his quickest pass of the weekend to get off the bump and into the ninth spot.
Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.114/312.50, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.152/278.12, Was #15
Smith was scheduled to run with Capps but decided to skip this round.
Capps goes right down the groove with his quickest pass of the weekend and moves up a few spots to the 12th position.
Left Lane: John Force Runs 4.100/312.28, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.098/312.86, Was #10
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.168/293.66, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.136/300.86, Was #15
A good side-by-side, both right down the middle of the track. Force doesn't improve but makes a good run just a little off his qualifying pace. Pedregon makes his third decent pass of the weekend.
Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.544/190.19, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.060/314.90, Was #8
Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 10.314/65.68, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.132/301.54, Was #14
Head goes up in smoke right about 60 feet out and clicks it off. Hight was on a decent pass, then the engine went silent about 800 feet out, not sure why.
Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.054/314.68, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.058/313.58, Was #6
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.096/309.63, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.108/305.84, Was #11
Wilkerson goes right down the groove with his quickest pass of the weekend and moves up a spot to tenth. Gray improves a little and stays in the sixth spot.
Left Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 4.042/291.76, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.049/308.85, Was #5
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.655/180.21, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.059/311.41, Was #7
Tasca started mixing up cylinders early and backed off the throttle about 800 feet out. Troxel made her quickest pass of the year and moved up a couple of spots to third.
Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 6.075/109.74, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.048/313.44, Was #5
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 5.075/151.99, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.044/318.92, Was #4
Arend gets about 400 feet out, starts moving around and clicks it off. Beckman had traction problems about 600 feet out and backed off the throttle.
Left Lane: Mike Neff Runs 5.529/127.17, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.038/314.17, Was #2
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 7.250/88.96, Now #1; Best prior run: 3.995/316.23, Was #1
Hagan gets about 300 feet out and goes up in smoke. Neff gets a little further and loses traction.
