I need a some help
Hey ya'll I've got a 97 dakota 3.9 v6 5 speed, that i'm wanting to make into an auto. I bought the thing with no trans and with a motor that knocks. and yet the entire thing only has 127000 on the dash. Anyway, I've already got all the auto matic things and another motor for it to make into an auto but have run into a few problems.
the motor and trans that i have are out of a 94 dodge ram 3.9 v6 auto.
One of my problems is on my 97 auto trans wiring, there are 2 sensor plugs that, i was told, relate to one another as Neutral safety switch plugs and the back up lights. On my 94 trans, there is only the 1 plug, right below the gear selector which controls all of that. would I run into problems with the one switch plugged up and the other plug tucked away?
Also on my 94 trans, the over drive control switch, also what i was told, is a 3 prong switch. Right by the gear selector. On my 97 wiring, it's a 7 prong plug. Could i splice the 97 wiring plug with only the wires that i need, splice them back together with my 3 prong plug, plug it all up and go on with no problems or am I going to have to spend 500 bucks for a trans that I absolutly know nothing about? Ya know.
If any body can help me, I would GREATLY appreciate it. I've been stuck with this thing for 2 weeks almost and cant drive it cuz it's my only vehicle.
And if it's not to much to ask, could i get wiring diagrams of both years labeling what each wire is spose to do regarding the switches. Again, i would love to know and say thanks to whoever can help me on this.

Hey 97 is there anyway you can get me the colors of the wires so i can see what i can come up with for you i have a 89 to 96 manual that i can find a few things for you but you might be able to go to a dealer and ask them to copy you a diagram of your situation and if they are a respectible dealer they should be able to get you on your way but if not at least give me the colors of your wiring ok

Hey C. thanks for responding. I didn't think i'd hear from any body on here but i would assume everybodys busy with other things. So thanks.
On my 94, comin off the harness, to the tranny plug, Are three wires.
Green w/ black stripe ;
Brown or Black (not real sure of that one) and
Orange w/ Black stripe.
I know this trans has a lock up convertor so one of those wires has to control that. At the same time, the other has to do with overdrive. Right? Whats the 3rd for? a ground or something........
Now on my 97 harness, I noticed this the other day. On the bottom of the plug, by each connector, they're numbered 1-7. What ever that relates too, i dunno, It must be a coding deal i would have to guess. I can name a few but they're coming off the top of my head. the rest i would have to get back to you probably, If i'm remembering correctly :
Black w/ Blue stripe
Orange w/ black stripe
Solid orange w/ solid yellow wrapped around one another
Purple
Orange w/ red stripe
Brown or Black ( again not real sure)
I think that's them if my mind serves me correctly. 21 years old and having trouble remembering my own b-day LOL. let me know if you can help me with this bro. I appreciate it.

Hey 97DK i talked to a friend of mine that does this for a living and this is what he tells me
The combination needs to have a specific setup to work properly. The choices are as follows: 1) Get the '94 harness and computer, and try to make it work in the '97- not advisable. 2) Get the '97 trans and computers/harness, and do it right. Still a bitch to do, but workable. 3) Replace what's hurt with what came out- everything bolts up, and the computer works. Late-model swaps aren't anything like when we did it in the driveway with a little toolbox, and a set of end wrenches. Sorry to burst the kid's bubble.
97 he is a very well known mechanic and what he says usually is the answer so i would try and get the auto trans from a 97 and use your motor that runs ,,, sorry if this doesn't help much but all this computor crap isn't for everyone including me

also i noticed on my 94 3.9, when i was replacein the upper end gaskets that it's got dome pistons. In my 97 the pistons are dished with a tit in the middle. In my 94, on the heads, the valves are bigger than the 97 too. What kind of v6 am i messin with here ? As far as i know, the older gentleman that i bought the truck off of at the time said nothings been done to it. it's completely stock but at the same time, it does have some power. LOL what do you think I've got?
