I am hoping someone can help me out!!!

I have installed a PS pump/ generator unit from a 1952 Chrysler Imperial in a 1949 Packard and this pump is pressurizing a Monroe power assist actuator (an external actuator that assists in moving the steering linkage).

The problem is that the Chrysler power steering pump only puts out 650 max PSI however the Monroe actuator needs 900 PSI to work correctly. The system works OK (just OK) however the system makes a humming sound when the car is in slow turns like when parking.

Does anyone know how to increase the pressure of the pump?

If someone could kindly zap me copies of the shop manual pages for just the PS pump from and then hopefully I can figure out how to increase the pressure output of the Chrysler PS pump by shimming up the pressure relief valve springs. I dont really want to have to buy an entire manual just so I can get the power steering system pages.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

the humming may be oil cavation in the pump. but if that is at low speed that doesnt sound like what is happening. the pumps on most chrysler cars in the late 60s will be from 800 to 1000 psi. the ones off of big body cars will have more psi. and volume pumps. best to check what the crank pulley dia and pump pulley dia are stock on the chrysler cars. and keep that same drive ratio. I.E. Fury 3, New Yorkers ect

I do not know what year Chrysler this pump came out of however I believe it was a 1952 Imperial because it has a 6V generator.

The noise is made regardless of the speed of the engine so therefore I am focusing on the flow control valve as being the culprit in making the humming noise because I am guessing that it is cutting off the flow at a lower threshold than what the Monroe External Actuator needs.

Can anyone please send me the pages of the manual that describe the PS pump operation and inspection? I would hate to have to buy an entire manual just for the four or five pages for the pump.

If I could understand the operation of the flow control valve I think I could shim up the spring with a couple of washers and get it to increase the GPM threshold of the pump to a higher setting.

 

after reading you post 2 times. it came to me that the pumps now days are vane pumps.. and the one you have should be a gear pump. a lot like the oil pump on our engines. better and could put out more pressure than the vane pumps. if modified.
