318 to 440
318 to 440
we have a 69 barracuda originally came with a 318 but we want to put a 440 in what do we need to do for this upgrade? We have currently brought front disc brakes. I'm told there is issues with fitting in power steer and the brake booster. Do we need the heavier torson bars??
Disk brake conversion ia a good upgrade. Personally I would NOT put in power brakes, leave them manual esp with a 440 as space will be tight....Similar to putting a 440 in a Dart. same A body style.. Very doable It does need some special considerations
Start with a Dana rear end, 727 trans, Caltrax rear suspension, have a new drive shaft with the BIG U joints, custom drive shaft loop TTI headers & lots of other little stuff

You failed to mention the HP you expect from the 440.
(Please be realistic, and specify if you're talking street or race.)
Can't speak to the space constraints. B-bodies don't have that problem.
Look into Shumacker conversion motor mounts.
You will need a big block trany.
Everything else depends on what's currently in the car.
If you have an 8.75 rear or bigger, leave it pending gear ratio changes, if you go that route.
Drive shaft will probably have to be re-sized at best. Probably a good time to replace the u-joints.
Torsion bare are iffy. The B-body t-bars from a small block car are enough for a big block (been running that way for about 30 years), with the smaller cars, don't know. Sincr the car is a 69, there might be other suspension replacements/upgrades in order.

X2 on the torsions. The brakes are a good idea, but not wholly necessary. I mean, what’s a big block weigh over a smalley? 150, 200 lbs? we don’t consider upgrading brakes every time a skinny kid gets into the car, do we?
haha, still, it’s a neat conversion.
Unsure about that specific model, but yea, the torsions may need addressing and maybe the k frame and motor mounts.

Disagree on the brakes. The "small engine" cars before 73, generally, came with totally inadequate brakes for today's driving. Yes, they do stop "a couple" of times.
T bars? You can't go too big. I don't believe there's THAT much weight difference between SB and RB, but that's not the point--- Even factory 340 T bars are not "that" stiff. I scored some .9? bars in a junker for my 67 Dart and man, they are "just right" for a 318 / 360!!!! If you don't have a sway bar, GET one!!! These cars don't need power brakes, but you should get disk brakes. The proper size master will get you good brakes!!! I'm running 73 / 74 front disk and Versailles rear disk with a manual master. I'm an old guy with leg troubles and I do fine with it.
