440 casting datenlead time

Hi Guys, I am new to this site and have a 67 GTX black with red/white interior that is in desperate need of a total resto. My question today is: What length of time is a typical engine casting date prior to build date? Thanks, Russ

well, if the car is a 67, the engine should have been casted in 65-66
i believe it is either 2-3 weeks (or months, cant remember, sorry) of the build date of the car
but the cars vin should match the engines if i remember right?
others can chime in

If it is 2-3 months prior to car build date on a 67, then how could it be cast as far back as 65?

The blocks were all casted a year or two before the build of the car because iron needs to rust. The blocks would be left to rust (at first, when iron rusts, it strengthens). So in reality, when you bought a new car in 67, the block, the numbers matching block, was a year or two older than the car.

Then what do you mean by "2-3 months from build date"?

I am not completely positive, but for example if a block is casted in march of 65, a 67 car built in march/april would get that motor.

I'm sorry, but given the nature of the industry, I really doubt that blocks were left to "season" for a year! Though a month or two is probable, most were within a few weeks.

I agree 100 %. There is no way any manufacture would carry that huge inventory for two years. Also, correct me if I am wrong but wasn't 67 the first year for the 440 in which case there is no way they would have planned two years ahead to come out with the 440 in 67 and started casting blocks in 65 in anticipation of the 67 cars.

The blocks still had to be machined. It was just the basic block that was left to rust. They still needed to be bored a bit, the screw holes needed to be drilled out, etc.

I have been doing some research about this topic, and to be honest, I found information that proves both of us right.
I am sorry, I guess I am not completely sure here.
Didn't mean to possibly lead you wrong.
