Unhappy 440 engine question.

i have a 66 chrysler New Yorker with a 440 in it. about 6 months ago my oil pump went while i was driving on the highway. car smoked a lot and didnt start after that. i changed the pump and the rattling from the valves went away. but i havnt moved the car because it has no power what so ever. almost as if it has no compression. anybody know what could of gone wrong? if so, is it even worth keeping? =/ i thought maybe i have a leak in my carb and needed it to get rebuilt. i tweeked the carb and nothing changed at all. any suggestions.?

You more than likely trashed the bearings, rings. Do you know what caused the pump to fail? Do you have a oil pressure gauge? What pressure does it show?Did you change the oil?

You are going to have to pull the engine and tear it down to see what exactly is wrong, but I'm pretty sure it is something catastrophic such as bearings or rings as mentioned above. It may be rebuildable, but you won't know for sure till you open it up and have a look.

did you loose complete pressure?
if so, if you kept driving, you'd have to pull the motor and pray

already then.. took the car up to hampton beach for 4th of july.on the way up car started whisteling. out of nowhere the car just started smoking. pulled over, waited a bit and added water. about 8 hours later turned the car back on. turned on fine. about 10 minutes later started smoking again.turned it off and got it towed home. next morning i tried turning it on again. sounded dry as if no oil was getting to the top. changed the oil pump and eventually the noise went away. when i went to move the car from one parking to another i noticed the car has no power what so ever. i turned the small diles in front of the carb to make it lean or rich and it doesnt do anything. think maybe i just need a new carb? where'd you guys think the whisteling came from?

it all depends on the damage
if the berings went without oil, you might need a new crank

was the car overheating during this time?
do you have a guage? what did it read?
when you say no power, you mean you gave it the gas and it just didnt move?

who gives a beep mate there's a off topic part on here thats where i live . i need as many clowns on here as i can to make me feel normal .
well if theres no metallic bits in the oil that is hopefully a good sign . was it making real bad nosies ? knocking or sounded bad ? are the spark plugs wet from oil , could it be your dizzy or ignition ? . try & get somebody to have alook at it even just for a prognosis ? mate you could even get a 2nd hand runner for under $1500 I'm sure . always look on the bright side of life :-)

Carlos, sounds like it's time to get your hands dirty! Pull the motor yourself, and tear into the engine. It's actually pretty easy to work on a 440,get yourself a repair manual (Haynes,Chilton) you can buy or rent a cherry picker, buy a cheap engine stand, basic hand tools and go to it.If this happen back in july,it's sounds like you are not in a hurry,so just take your time and if you have any problems, just give us a shout. Good luck!

How about basic troubleshooting first? Drag your frozen *** over to Autozone and rent a compression tester, or build the leak-down tester I posted here before. Could be simple as a blown head gasket or warped/cracked head from overheating. I've seen it before. Do your homework Carlos, you may get off easy.

Sort of sounds like it could be a head gasket. Do some testing before tearing it out of the car. You might get off easy.
