69 Fury 318 best cruising speed?
I have a 69 plymouth fury sedan 2 barrel 318 automatic all original except for tune up parts and 3 inch exhaust. Going to be taking it on its first 200+ mile trip. What is the best cruising speed on the highway for the best gas mileage? What is the average gas mileage to expect? thanks
Some claim 20 mpg but I don't believe them !! My Dad almost always drove those 500 ci caddies. He had a 64 Buick Wildcat 4dr I wouldn't mind having one today. It was a very unusual car 4dr Buckets, floor shift auto, center consul. As kids we drove from LA, Ca to NY and back probably averaging 80 mph

I've seen 318s get 20, and have heard outlandish claims
I put a 71 340 into my '70 sixpack RR body in about 73 or so. So this is a heavy car, Dana 3.54, A833, "hang on" after market A/C. It would get an honest 17.5 on the highway. I was not all that careful a driver. When I "got on" the freeway, I GOT ON the freeway.
Engine photo is right after it was installed. I was broke, and had no money for "chrome." Next is young skinny little me
Bottom photo is before I owned it. My good friend George, who had just trophied in pure stock probably at Lions. I bought it from him with 35K on the clock. The original engine broke the no6 rod, broke the cam (in about six pieces), drove valves through pistons, and a rod out the block. I removed the intake, distributor, valve covers and threw the rest in the garbage.
My leading chief liked to do a Columbo impersonation, and I don't even know if Columbo was on the air then. Chief would knit his eyebrows, frown in concentration, and they say "I do have one question?" "Are ya sposed ta be able ta look down into the engine and see the GROUND!!!?"
Putting the 340 in was interesting, because only 318s came in 70 B bodies. The mounts are a little different, I had to use 318 single exhaust until I could afford headers, and had to turn the bell register larger for the 18 spline retainer. This was before "Al Gore invented the internet."
