727 Help
My tranny is a 68 or 69 model. On the rear of the transmission, right above the middle of the pan there is a hole a bolt would go into. What is the size of the bolt, what is it used for, and where can I get one? Mine fell out and leaked tranny fluid all over the place.
Here's a picture of it:

Little hard to tell, but I'm assuming that is the RHS you are showing??
Could be #3.....if it is, it is not a bolt, but a pipe plug (1/8" NPT)
Probably the same as that drain in your pan.
BTW...not crazy about that drain's position. Normally they are located on the side (at the bottom).....could be a disaster waiting to happen.
Those pictures came from Carl H. Munroe's 727 transmission handbook. Available at many locations.

In your picture like mine it is a non threaded driven in plug. In Monroe's book it shows up here and there in pictures but is a threaded plug with a female hex.

I believe it is niether a plug nor a bolt. It looks to me like the pivot pin that the low reverse band adjuster rides on. The tab on the housing keeps the pin in place in case of failure. It is a press fit and needs an o ring to seal. Yours kinda looks like the center is a hole, but it should just be an indentation. The pan will have to come off at the very least. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Not realy that hard to do, once you get aquainted with it.
In the pictures posted by "lilredex" it is the big hole bottom right portion of the case in the bottom right photo. It has a trough below it for installing said pin.
dgriz13 do these pictures look like what you are having problems with?
Here are a couple pictures of the area in question.
In the first picture the arrow (A)points to the area noted in the photobucket photo.
The second picture shows what it looks like under the pan. The trans is very dirty on the outside but arrow (A) shows the location of the leak. Arrow (B) shows the adjuster that rides on the pin.

Looking at your picture more, it looks like there was a bolt or something threaded in there. If that is threaded you may get lucky and find the right plug or bolt to put in it. It really looks like some one might have tapped it in an effort to stop a prior leak.
I have never seen a pin with any threads in it befor.
I have worked on a few of these in my time.
It's a puzzler for sure. If you do have to remove that pin for a new o-ring seal, the tail shaft will have to come out as the pin is installed from the rear. Can be done in the car, but I would pull the trans. Makes ya wonder what other sillieness some one has done in there. A good upgrade while the trans is open would be a '73 or later valve body as it will have the part throttle kickdown your older model does not have. You will love the difference. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.
