BBD Rebuild Kits?

Im looking to rebuild my 2-barral Carter BBD. It's on a 318 Cal. in a '73 Charger. Id love to upgrade the carb and manifold but the moths in my wallet won't allow it. The problem is that the previous owner(s) swapped the stock A.T. with a manual transmission. The charts in my Hygrade Jiffy Kit Give a couple options for the 318...

DODGE, PLYMOUTH -- SPECIFICATION I.D.-C

1973 318 Eng.--A.T.--Export………………………or
--M.T……………………………….....

OR

DODGE, PLYMOUTH -- SPECIFICATION I.D.-E

1973 318 Eng.--A.T.--Ext. Cal.; M.T. Cal…….......or
--Cal.; M.T.--Exc. Cal….............

I was thinking top of SPECIFICATION I.D.-E, (A.T.--Ext. Cal; M.T. Cal...)
Plus I'm considering switching to a four speed Auto with a B&M Sport Shifter since there's already a hole in the floor.
If I do switch back to an automatic, will I need to tear the carb down again?

E is probably good for you. Any differences between the two are likely external adjustments to the choke, accelerator pump and C.A.S. system, not a big deal to change later.

Thank you guys for the responses. I found a couple 727's for under $200. If I get a rebuild kit and a manual for it, is it pretty straight forward? I am quite capable mechanically. Ive rebuild engines, done a front end with torsion bars (not something I want to do for a while), but this project will be a first. Any special tools required? Should I leave it to the pros?

You should be able to get it done easily enough. The only "Special" tool I needed was a slide-hammer to get the pump out. There are a lot of specialty tools for the trannies, but you can get by easy enough with a little fore thought. I would recomend you get the book from Monroe and have a good read first.

Very good book, some videos on you tube aswell. Feeler gauges and a dial indicator will help.

Easy way to remove the front pump !! Thread some bolts into the threaded holes of the pump & use a claw hammer to pop it out

Awesome, thank you guys. I have both of those hammers and soon that book! Also just found a 727 for $75. Guy said it was working when pulled, but think ill rebuild it for piece of mind anyway.

So I'm about to rebuild my Carter BBD but while previewing the steps and the specifications in the kits manual, I noticed small, "to the power of" numbers. For Float Level adjustment it reads 1/4 with small 2 top right. For Pump Travel it reads 15/64 with a small 16 top right. I bought a pocket rule that displays 64ths, but the small "to the power of" numbers are stumping me. Do i need an additional unit of measure to properly adjust my carb?

Those small numbers are there to direct you to the footnotes only. At the bottom of the page or at the end of the instructions will be the footnotes for additional direction or information.

Better yet, make yourself a puller, like this for your pump (1" square tubing + 3/8" threaded rod) ......it comes out nice and straight that way.

Make up a stand too..... you can just see mine in the above picture.

Best references are Mopar (red) repair manuals from the 70/80's, Carl Munroe's book and Petersen's "Dodge Truck Repair Manual" for a no B.S. straight forward basic repair (if it is still in running condition)

Thank you again Coronet 500, and lilredex for the great puller design. Im done with the BBD rebuild and about to buy new vacuum hoses but I'm not sure which ones I can void without hurting performance. Does the charcoal canister still need to run to the carb bowl? There's a few others I'm skeptical about too...
