They are threaded. Right hand threads. Mancini Racing sells the special socket that will work great. Since they are old you can heat up the upper control arm. You can also try a huge chinese cresent wrench with a pipe cheater.

I had to rent a ball joint installer/remover from advance auto for $100 for mine every other ball joint, tie rod, etc. Poped out with the ball join removal fork and a hammer. But I have one ball joint welded in from last owner not knowing how to work on a car so I need a new control arm. But I also have a newer car.

They can be a "B" to get out. You need the special socket to remove them And a 1/2" impact helps. Just go easy as it is easy to strip the threads. Use some heat on the control arm.. If they are rusted ?? good luck !! use lots of PB Blaster
BUT This is a good time to update to the later ball joints / disk brakes ? and larger bolt pattern if you so desire
Lowers are a piece of cake !!

What happens on those old threads is the get stripped when you remove the old ball Joint. Then when you put the new one in it won't tighten up. Then you tack it in with 4 or 5 small tacks. So maybe the last owner had this issue.
