I have recently obtained my grandfathers truck. I do however hear a ticking noise coming from left side looking at the motor from the front bumper. i think its a lifter I am new to the V8 life though and do not know allot about them so any advice would be great links to lifters ,pistons ,etc. would be great. i have already got in mind to cam it with the whiplash 318 hues engine's CAM .Also i would like to make this a stroker engine how do i accomplish that does it need bored out or can i just buy a bigger crank shaft PLZ LINKS INFO ......

Congratulations on the truck.
The engine noise could be anything. It’s difficult to say without looking at it. The ticking noise could be a simple exhaust leak (very common) or something more serious. Does the ticking change or go away after the engine reaches operating temperature? Does the engine misfire (Google how to do a power balance test)?
You could check for black soot around exhaust manifold where it meets the cylinder head. I’ve also used a stethoscope, I almost never use the metal probe part, I just hover the hose above the suspected source I’m looking at.
You could remove the valve covers to to make sure all the valves are moving while cranking the engine and to check for loose push rods.
Ticking noise aside you could also perform a compression test to get an idea of how healthy the cylinders are.
I can’t offer you any specific advice on building a stroker engine but, I can give you some general advice/information.
I wouldn’t buy any internal engine parts (pistons, rings, rods , bearings, etc) until either you or your machinist take measurements.
Camshaft break-in is an important subject worth researching.

I only recently got the power master alternator to start it it will start up and run after a few mins without giving it gas the ticking sound only get worse i want to say from what iv heard so far. I think i have gotten over th idea of Stroking the engine but i have gathered a parts list any advice for this parts or better parts would be great.DO you still think i should have this measurements checked if i just get these types of things with out Stroking the engine

thank you for that I do hope that it will be fixed by putting in a cam the cam i want comes with lifters and timing chain How hard is it to have a compression test done on it I've been told that a good compression test will tell me allot but i honestly feel like its deff a lifter ticking really bad.

Compression test is easy on that motor. Compression test will tell you if your valves are seating and sealing along if the pistons are sealing and holding compressed air. Indirectly if a cam is shot it won't be sucking in air which could show low compression as mine did, but back to your problem. Ticking by your description is caused by space/clearance. Could be a bent pushrod, valve guide, loose seat. It's time to do some exploratory surgery.

Okay thank you all very much for the information i will be planning to have a compression test and a cleaning on my 318 done to really see what I've got to work with. i will be back with the information that i am given hopefully inna few weeks or so. than i will be ready to make a GREAT 318 for my d150.Right now I am working on my house roof too so it may take longer than expected to have it done but at least i know the first couple of steps that i need to take. Hopefully all good news to come.
