It might be the gas trank itself. I had one that did that, I could drive it for about4-5 miles and then it would just die on me. Would let it sit a while 10-15 mins. and it would start up again and go 4-5 miles than die. After replacing the whole ignition , alt and batt. {was upgrading anyway so money was well spent} a friend of mine came over, got under the car and thumped on the gas tank, "your tank is full of crud, gotta replace it". He was correct. [it was sucking up dirt and then it would settle down].

When it dies out, you need to check for spark. Hold the plug wire [end] about a 1/4 inch away from the plug and have someone turn over the engine. Look for a nice bright blue spark. {use insulated pliers}.

Got good spark? yes good. Now look down the throut of the carb whilst you work the linkage, opening the throttle plates. You should be able to see the gas squirting from the acceleraror pump..

When it does start, you need to check the running voltage with a voltmeter

If it wont turn over att all ther is probably a short somewhere or maybe a defective starter solenoid. {does the batt go dead too when this happens}
