Flashing Lights
My brake and reverse lights aren't working. The night lights work though but just don't light up when you press the brakes. Also when you put the car in reverse the reverse lights don't come on. What could cause this? Some kind of switch? How would I check it?

Sparky to the rescue! Not sure if both of those are on the same fuse, but you've checked that already, right? I'm not thinking ground because the running lamp filament uses the same ground path in the 1157 bulb in the tail lights. You got turn signals working in the rear? That should tell you if the hi-lite filament wire to the rear is working, that and the brake lights share the same wire. I"ll be up for a while, laid off from Chrysler.

Great. Now we're on to the brake light switch. Dont want to sound condescending, but there are alot of young folks here. Do you know where the brake light switch is?

Well unless they were weird in 65, it should be a small "button" type switch on the brake pedal arm inside the car. Should contact the arm 6-10 inches above the pedal. It would probably have a plastic connector and 2 wires going into it.

If you found it, use your electrical meter. Have one? If not we go to plan "B" Can yahoo im if you want. "Talk to me Goose"! You want to find if you have "continuity " through the switch when its activated.

ok the easiest way to test it its to unplug the sensor-switch and just jump the two wires that go to the sensor, if the lights turn on then the switch is faulty
If the lights dont come on check for power on one of the two leads going to the sensor if neither has +12v then you must follow the wire back to the fuse box,
i would highly advise you to make sure the light bulbs work and the easiest way to know if they work is to turn on the blinkers, if the blinkers and the brakes use the same light bulb and the blinker works then chances are its just the brake switch-sensor or the combination switch (blinker rod)
good luck and let us know how it goes!

Already checked the turn signals for blinking. But thank you. I never mean to be condescending to anyone, but I dont always know who I'm talking to, or their level of experience. I try to start with the basics and then help them from there.

That should be it. What you want is to find 12v at the switch. You Should find 12 v at one side of the switch and on both sides when the pedal is depressed. If you dont get a reading on both sides when depressed, make a jumper wire and then check the lights. On your car, do the brake and turn sigs use the same bulb or are they separate?
