I was lying in bed thinking... If when I go to the gas pumps and want 93 octane fuel/high test and it is a multi octane pump.... How much 87 am I getting from the guy before me until it comes out 93 and how much 93 is the guy after me getting until it goes back to 87??????? There is a lot of hose,pump, and piping to fill before it gives you what you paid for...Back in the day there were separate pump for different grades of fuel.. Just a thought and if anyone knows the answer that would be a plus....Bill Wow this sound like a Moe post... Ok Bob your turn...

 

Great subject...Ive pondered this as well....
I dont know how much it is but im sure its less fair for a guy with a motorcycle with a tank so small compared to a car gas tank because of bigger volume you probably wouldnt notice. You could do what I allays did when gasing the bike up i would only use a pump that someone just pumped high grade last.

 

I've thought this too. That's why I always dump the first two or so gallons of gas on the ground when I fill up, just to be safe.

 

It's about 3-tenths of a gallon or less....
The check valves for the product are just under the dispenser behind the lower door....
There is also a difference between a high flow nozzle and a standard flow nozzle. But I believe I'm still close at 3-tenths.

2 gal...on the ground......safe? of course you are smoking at the same time. here in Kansas has a law says gas can MUST be the ground and NOT in your trunk. YA think? EDIT: dont for forget gasoline has a flash point of MINUS 45 degrees F.

ya it should be. but the internet is FULL of filling station fires. the best one i have seen was a dueally TWK with 5--5 gal cans in the bed. cat standing in front of them running gas in them. but for long.

 

Actually, the only time I EVER smoke is while pumping gas. I find that the smoke covers the nasty fuel smell nicely.

 

years ago i had a car painter tell me that a cigerattee will not set off gas unless you knock a spark off. i am NOT willing to test it. i only smoke a pipe. did not start till i was 62. and i have cut back a lot lately i do 3-4 bowels a week max. and its cheap.

 

The vapor is usually what catch's fire.....Not so much the liquid....

 

as all ways bob is right. a long that line which ever fuel you have if its temp is to low you most likely not get it lite. thats why you see the nitro cars get some gasoline in the intake to get them started.

 

As a serious drag racer in the past, chew on this for "Weird or What"

Highest octane used to be had by a 50/50 mixture of high octane and regular.
If you really want to light up your power plant dissolve 6 tblsp of moth crystals
per gallon of gas and keep a roll of toilet paper on the seat beside you.
A pint of 90% rubbing alcohol per gallon of gas will yield unbelievable horse power.
A very small nozzel mounted in the air cleaner and a garden sprayer full of distilled
water atomizing there abouts will render a serious fuel charge.
A coiled fuel line in a juice can full of ice does wonders for hot engine bays. Don't
use dry ice though - minute particles of moisture in the gas will form crystals.
If you can't get enough h.p. out of your fuel, throw out the back seat, spare tire,
jack, passenger seat, carpet, arm rests, glove box door and unused window cranks.
Every pound matters. Some guys acid washed their cars to lessen the metal thickness.
Others had only enough fuel in their tank to go from A to B. Getting back was the issue.
Who cares how much fuel is in the pump hose - dump the first two quarts in a Jerry can
and take it home for the lawnmower.

Rooty, it wasn't the issue of putting the first 2 qts. into a jerry jug. It was that you are paying for premium fuel and getting low grade fuel.. My biggest concern was how much sh-t fuel were you getting before the premium comes out of the nozzle... And my buddy Bob Hogan answered that and it isn't enough to worry about... Bill
