Finally tearing into a 440 we got with our $240 motorhome, was stuck when we bought it and guy gave us a separate good running 440 and 727 for $150 extra which the wife and I muscled in to get it running (thats a looooong story)..

either way- one head off and everything looks good, SERIOUS blow by, quite some bore wear up top but seems std bore.

What's with the H stamp in front of the 440 mean - HP version? Also does that 1 - 5 - 71 indicate year/month?

 

Casting date is 01/05/1971, I’d say it’s a 1971 block…🙃

 

The H means 1972, G 1971 , F 1970 and so on. January 5th is correct but they labeled them 72 even though it says 71. Either way great find!!
