How to tell what engine a Valiant had from vin?
Hi does anyone know where I would look up the engine code for my `63 valiant to find out what it originally had? Also is there a good rear end identifier recommendation? I have a 10 bolt cover posi rear that IIRC came out of a `70 Mopar with a 440 and while it resembles a Dana 60 I am not sure if that is what it is.

Post the VIN and someone will run it for you (senior member or mod/admin). As far as your rear axle goes, here is a good thread to follow with pics. If you are still unsure, post up a pic of it.

Thanks Tim,
The casting # on it is 2852905 so axle is an 8 1/4" and from what I gather the posi is the Sure-Grip unit. The axle is approx 64" from flange to flange (wheel mounting surface) outside to outside of drum face so I am still trying to figure out what car it came from but I am a lot closer than I was before. Thanks again. Dach.

the easy way to tell the difference from a 170 or a 225. with the head and ext manifold on. if you can pass your thumb between the ext manifold and the back side of the water pump casting you have a 225. if it is all most touching it is a 170.
