possible project

A buddy of mine was cleaning out his grandpa's basement earlier this week and he found a mostly complete 383. His grandpa said the engine is from a 1968 road runner and it was built up pretty well in the 90s and was in a dart until he decided to put a new motor in the dart. But anyways, I have yet to look at the engine but my friend says it is bored 30 over, has domed pistons, a hot cam and a mean valve job. He don't know what intake and carb it has but we will deffinitley chack it out soon. His grandpa gave us permission to take the engine and do whatever we want with it. We are going to make sure everything is there and maybe see what else we can do to it in terms of cam, carb, intake, heads, headers, ignition, etc. The only catch is we don't have a car to put it in. My dad, being the die hard chevy freak that he is has refused to help us with this project. So me and my friend are now looking for a car that we can afford and maybe co-own. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for what kinds of cars to look for that are pretty inexpensive but can still handle a 383. Also, if anyone has any tips or ideas for building/hot rodding a 383, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

Any car can handle it, it all depends on how you build it. If it is pretty well built now, I would think about just freshing it up some and running it the say it is maybe. You'll need a strong tranny and rear axle to back it up. After that, it all depends on what car you want to throw it into.

thanks Tim
how hard is it to put a 383 in a duster, or even an aspen or volare? we're kind of on a tight budget so we are hoping to find a car that is already set up for a big block. For a tranny we were just thinking an 833 or a new process 4 speed. probably an 8.75 rear too.

That motor should fit right in. As long as you have everything for a manual tranny, then go that way. Otherwise I would just look for a BB 727 as they are cheaper and provide fast shifting.

Or you can get a F body like a Volore or Apen which has more than enough room for a RB/B engine.

yeah I'm thinking we will end up with an aspen or a volare, theyare way cheaper. will we have to do much front end work to get the 383 to fit or will it drop right in?

no offense but your old man needs to get over it - here is his chance to hang out with you, pass some knowledge, generally have a good time and hes passing it up...

have him listen to the song "cats in the cradle", then ask again for him to help you with it...
