O.K. so I got the 440 in the 68 Coronet and 2 things..
1.) It turns over and over but does not want to start and I think I have that one figures out to where the timing is off...
2.) As I am cranking the motor over my steering wheel just started to turn over to the left by itself...I get the wheels straight and their it goes again when I crank on it.


Who know what can cause that?

 

At first I thought you meant the motor would turn over when you turned the steering wheel --Had to re-read it. Maybe someone with more experience could chime in. The only thing I could think of is this:

A) Is the steering linkage coming in contact with the motor?
B) Is the steering box or column coming in contact with exhaust manifold or header?
C) Do you have a broken motor mount?

 

There is a centering valve on top of the steering box/gear that needs to be adjusted. the valve is where the high pressure hose hooks to the box. 2 bolts and it slides dont have to move it much maybe 1/16" they are very sensitive.And is done with engine off, tighten the bolts before starting the engine..Bill

 

And to add...... Keep your hands clear of the steering wheel when you start the engine after adjusting...

I will try that today. I have to take off the front part of the engine to realine the timing chain.

 

The steering box adjustment- I would start with 1/32" it is very sensitive Just loosen the bolts 1/2 turn and tap on the adjustment block to move it

 

on the steering pump. if needed you can flushing the fluid. but only with oil. do NOT use solvent or other thin fluids. the pump WILL seize up.
