Tool Help & Question

Hey everyone Im looking for a good place to get some tools. I wanted to know if there are any good places on the net to buy from.

I was just looking at Harbor Freight USA and they have a mig welder that runs off of house current for $89.99 but that is in store price. The store is about half hour or so away from me.

I sold a mig welder a few years ago that I bought brand new and never got to use. I thought I would sell it to someone who needed and would use it until I could get back on my project.

My dad had a big welder that he used at his shop and when he did a lot of frame work. This was a big gas tang welder and its not something I would need.

Im really looking for a good deal right on a mig welder. I want one that will run off of house current. I know I can rent a welder and be done with it but I do have another project that I want to do later on.

My dads tools have been used for twenty plus years and some will need to be replaced but most if not all are still good and like new.

I would like to find a good place online that has good prices and good tools. I really need a welder right now or by spring.

I have a 110 volt welder, and a Mig (220) welder. The smaller one is barely OK for sheet metal. They use no gas to shield the weld and the appearance of the welds look horrible. Save your money and look for a good used Mig welder. Harbor freight is OK for the occasional use tool or something that is not going to be stressed too hard. I have bought a few things there, and have been pleased but be careful.

I think I might save my money and look for a used one. I got a price today of one that is made by Miller (spelled wrong) for 625 I think it uses both house curruent or gass.

My dad just talked to them and he said they might have some used ones. I think we have a farm tractor place here in town still so I might call them and see what they have.

If worse comes to worse I will just rent one to use for what I need and then buy one later on.

I wasnt sure how the welder from them would be and I posted on a few places and Im getting word that it is not that great. I think for about 80-100 bucks more I can get a nice one that would work.

My dad is a Matco Tools distributor and he has a used mig welder on the truck right now but I don't know any specs or details. Too bad matco doesn't sell online or I'd tell you to get a Matco, lol

Tell me about this mig welder

http://www.tractorsupply.com/welding...welder-3811167

I cant find much on it on the net yet. Im trying to find reviews and will go to youtube as well to see what I find on it.

I called the tractor supply place today as well as the other outlets. The girl at the tractor place said they only had two brands the Campbell and Hobart.

The Campbell is 199 and that helps my wallet but wont help me weld if its a piece of junk.

Thanks all and Im still looking and learning on what I need and will buy. The Miller welder Im still holding on to but they are only open on week days.

It's hard to weld auto sheet metal with a flux core welder. If you do decide to get a flux core, make sure it has the capability to be converted to actual MIG> (gas shielded). Then, you can eventually switch it over to the gas at some time in the future. I've got an old Lincoln weldpak 100 that I bought a gas conversion kit for. But, now I have to save up to buy the gas bottle. I would scout around on E-Bay.

Hobart is a good product in the welding industry. Been around a long time.
Have you looked on the goverment liquidation web site? www.govliquidation.con
Sometimes they got smokin' deals but you got to go to the base to pick the stuff up.

Yeah Im looking at going with one that is both gas and glasless and the Hobert 140 is that and I think 125 is as well.

The Miller is for sure im just waiting and saving a bit to get a good welder and im in no rush.

I did see Tractor Supply has if I order off line I get 10% with free shipping to their store.

Im going to take that info in to the Tractor Supply store localy and say hey how would you like to make a sale today and take that 10% off and put that money in the stores pocket and not the online store front.

This will be something in the future if they dont do they will not have a job and stores will close (for the most part) as more and more are doing online shopping.

I then will ask if I can use the $5 dollar offer as well

This brings up in my mind a story (makes me laugh) back in 98 or 99 fall carlisle show. I was looking at a 69 Hemi GTX and a Hemi GTX convert both where 23-25 thousand.

My mom walks up to me and tells me to offer 18-19 for the car and that was an offer on both cars each getting 18-19. I laughed and said your joking and she no Im not..........................Mom walks over how about 18 for your car. The guy with the GTX laughed and said no and the guy with the Convert said H** no are you crazy.

My mom turned to me and said they are not worth more then that lol until Barret Jackson came on tv............

Back to the welder it will be both able to weld with gas or flux.

Craiglist tools section can be good too. TSC can be a bit pricey.

They have a deal right now Hobart Model 140 for $479+10% off and free shipping to their store.

If the price of the Miller is not close to the 479 or less then I may go with this one but again im in no rush.

Hobart and Miller = same company now, Miller makes the unit, Hobart Brothers make the consumables (stick/wire etc.) Both business units are owned by ITW. I would definately look at the Miller if the price is right. The lincoln Weld-Pak works quite well with the gas setup on it too (that's what I have).

Agreed, a flux core is rather difficult to weld auto sheet metal, and the gas shielding is much better, but if you have the capability the flux wire WITH gas shielding makes an even better looking weld than either alone... The HF welders are junk. Even the 220v version is not that great. JMHO.....
