Do I need to ise a different torque converter for a six-pack carb setup?

Not unless you're changing the cam and/ or diff gears.

Welcome aboard.

I have to idle it @ 1100 rpm or it will kill the engine when I put it in gear....

Ya know, a little more info would be helpful. 1100 @ idle may be ok for a race car, but of a street car, might be too much cam, might be a vacuum leak or something else.
