Valve Lash

Hey Guys, I've got a 69' 440 with stock 906 heads. But I do have aftermarket
adjustable rockers and a solid lifter cam. The cam was in the engine when I bought the car, the pervious owner did'nt know the cam specs. It's a pretty mild cam. I was wondering if anyone could give me a ballpark estimate on where I should set my valve lash. Any help would be great.

Setting lash wont change because of the rockers. Lash is dictated by the lifter. I still use EOIC for all I do.

If you are going to set lash you can get your approx cam lift. Using a cheap dial micrometer when the exhaust valve begins to open place the dial indicator on to of the Push Rod on the Intake valve and record the sweep when rotating the motor. Try and keep the same angle as the PR to avoid erroneous readings. Right down your number and multiply it by rocker ratio.

It may be a dual pattern cam so repeat on exhaust valve.

You could also go by the repair manual
slant 6 .010H Int .020EXH
318 Poly .010H int .018H ex
.012E .010 ex just a safe starting point to run the engine until the can be checked warm..

Also do you know for sure that it is a solid cam and not just adjustable rockers ??? That makes a big difference

Thanks for all the advise guys. When I actually took the time to check the lash
turns out it's set to zero. You were right Lynn, it has HYDRAULIC lifters ...
I was just going off what the previous owner told me[solid lifters].
I can look down the pushrod openings and see the keepers on top of the hydraulic lifters. Solid lifters would not have these keepers on them.... Am I correct ??

For hydraulic lifters your preload should be 1/2 of a turn after zero lash for steel heads and 3/4 of a turn after zero lash for aluminum heads.
