2.4L oil leak
2.4L oil leak
I bought a non running 2006 PT Cruiser for cheap - $890.00. The owner said it had a water leak. I bought it hoping for a head gasket issue but knowing it might require a complete engine rebuild, which I ended up doing as it had sat for a long period of time and water had gotten into the cylinders. During the rebuild I had the engine and head checked for cracks and the surfaces milled for flatness. So here's my question. When I first started it there was a significant oil leak at the right rear corner of the head (new head gasket of course). Before dismantling the engine a second time, I decided to let it run and bring it up to operating temperature just to make sure the engine ran with no issues. I noticed the more it ran, the less oil it leaked. I have done this three different times now and the oil leak seems to have ceased. I have looked up from underneath and where I used to see oil coming out now there is none.
Is this normal? I am wondering if the head and/or gasket finally seated after the engine was brought up to temperature a few times. Sounds odd to me, but it seems to be the case.

Sounds like it may have the wrong gasket installed? However, I'm sure the problem will come see you at the worst possible time later down the road.
But to answer your qestion.... I dont think that is normal.... Keep us posted...
