440 Help
I have a 69 Satellite I am going to make in to a driver but it has no Engine.I have found a 440 and good trans in a 75 Town and Country wagon.. Can anyone tell me what it would have for HP and what a good cam and intake would be to put in and on it to wake it up some? Thanks
a 1975 standard duty 440 was 230 h.p., the best cam would be a 284-484 purple shaft w/ an edelbrock alum. intake. I dont know the part # but its basically a stock replacemant in alum. it flows well and use at least an 725 edelbrock performer carb. thast the best way to wake that 440 up and still run on 93 octane gas with no probs. Run a little higher stahl converter as well like a 2400-2700- stahl.the stock converter in the 75 trans is a lockup and runs a low stahl. giving you a slow start of the line.
You shouldn't have to move the tranny crossmember. The trannies are about the same length, just different bell housing for small blocks and big blocks. I'd be willing to be that sat came with a small block.
To make power I agree with rr. I would look a little into what heads were used during those years and see if they have all the same specs as the ones of earlier. Heads will cut a down or make a lot of power.

It originally had a 383 it's a sport satellite. I found the original hood in the yard I got it from and it has a 383 in the emblem on the front of the hood. I will try finding some info on the heads. Whats a decent 440 head? Thanks for all your guy's help.
the 906 casting haed is the best. from 68-70. the last 3 numbers on the cast # on the heads are what imm efering too. the next best which is what this 75 motor your looking at are the 452 head. they have the hardened valve seats for unleaded gas. and flow the same as the 906.
i never liked the purple cams
you have to be careful with which one you pick
the one i had came alive at a higher rpm, and with a 440, you want to take advantage of the torque
i got a good new cam, and its working out fine
i'll look for the specs and part numbers for you

the hyd, cam shaft and tappet package for the 1-bolt , 284-284-68degree, valve lift @ 484 with CL of 108 is # P4120235 which is a purple shaft hydralic kit it is used for modified competition with either an auto or manual but if you want good torque and power i would go with the kit # P4286677 which has 272-272-48* and valve lift of 455 at CL of 112 which is a good all around cam for the street and track when you need it
but remember to always go new with both cam and lifters when changing

dont forget to lub the lobes of the cam and lifters, run the car for 20-30 minutes, you also need break in oil
then imediatley drain the oil
also, make sure you are using an oil with zinc in it

just use the valvoline high millage oil or the vr1 as it has some of the most zinc it it and like 67 says use breakin lube for the cam and dont be shy on the amount u use on it this will break your cam in nice ...
