440 noise

i just found a 69 block 440 out of an old stationwagon freshened it up, put in new oil pump. plastigaged the bearings put in my 533/320 purple shaft, cloyce dual roller chain, new .020 sreel head gaskets, headers and three inch exhaust. installed the engine in my 69 roadrunner and for three days it ran great. then there was a really strange crrrrrr noise from the front of the block under the distributor. i have taken the intermediate shaft out and changed it ,the noise changed to a more squeeling or singing noise coming from the same spot. i just ordered a new bushing to go under the gear but i am stumped i have owned this car for 23 years and have never had this kind of problem????????????with any of the 383s or 440s that i have had in it the dist is a brand new unilite had it checked it is fine. any help here would be greatly appreciated thanks alot neil

If you did not see any signs of wear or damage, are you looking in the right spot? This may sound like a dumb question but, are you sure its not the water pump?

Could it be the dizzy? Water pump like fivepoint mentioned, maybe a different pulley?

Sounds and noises can travel through metals before being heard so they sound like they are coming from one spot when they are actually something else.

Literally just had that problem with my 64 880. Check out YouTube. Type in 64 880 engine noise. Should come up. I was trying all kinds of stuff, changed pump, presto.

You need to grab an auto stethescope and source it. The ear cups block all the high freq noise thats bouncing all over the engine and the source noice will be blantantly obvious.

With the car running you can find small things like pin hole exhaust leaks and dry steering rack seals...

I think they are on ebay for less that 10 bucks..

I agree with the stethoscope. Also remember down there is your fuel pump pushrod down there also. You could pop out you fuel pump then the rod and check it out.
