B and RB Blocks

Ok, I know that they could make the 383 any bigger, so they came out with the RB block, which was first the 413. Was this because they couldn't bore out, stroke out, or do both to the 383?

Also, which block is the 400 engine from?

the 400 is in the b- eng. platform, which includes, 361,383,400. They had to raise the deck height for the 413 due to the extra length in the stroke.they made a 383 rb motor in like 63, but it didnt go over well ,so they didnt do it long. it was bacically a destroked 413.

Ok, so they just bored out the 383 to make the 400?

And, to get from 413 to 426 to 440, they just bored the block out each time?

Yes.

Raised the deck for the stroke I think.

hi there

A good reason to seek out a 400 block is that it has a much thicker cylinder wall allowing you to machine it out for a much larger displacement.

What vehicle is it going into and for what purpose? Race? Sunday driver? Daily driver?

i don't need too But . my 383 is a fresh .040 over stock rebuilt engine .( about 500 miles ) i have all sorts of things going on in my head ( options of things to do ) , and my best mates are hardcore petrol heads ( chevy victims ) all they think about is more horse power then more again ect ect. anyway i plan to build my valiant in stages , i guess you could say my strategy for my limited budget & limited experience . by the end of the year i would like too be running low 12's who know's mabye a high 11 . using my indy ez heads .600 cam & exhaust system .( hoping for 500 ish hp ) & next year go a stroker kit & cnc porting . NOW BACK TOO THE SLEEVING . most of the bigger cube kits use .060th bores . so if i go .060 for 1 season & rering 2nd season then resleeve ect it should last a while . use bigger cubes & less rpm .the money i save on a block i could get a gurdle & good caps , new oil pump . then next stage new rear gears & tougher 727 . iam just trying to think ahead to make the ute evolve with me . my ute weighs 3240 lbs with me in it ( i am about 190 lbs ) it would see limited street use just a slow cruise to & from shows , & trailered to the track . well i hope that wasn't to much for ya any sugestions apreciated thanks .

Just because your chevy fellows are doing it doesn't mean you should. I would build your 383 how are are going now and stick with that. The more you bore out the more heating problems you can run into later on down the road.

the 1976 - 1978 blocks for the 400 and 440 are a tin wall casting design as such they shouldent be bored out more then .020 so if any one has one they want to race i suggest on getting one pre 1976 for better build up and DK if you want your car to run in the 12's to 11's there is a whole list of componets you have a choice from just let me no and we can make that 383 screem if you have the time and money i can give you a list if you would like
