Broke Down
I was driving my 1970 Coronet a couple miles home from a cruise in tonight and while i was driving I had the factory radio on and it made a huge pop sound and then the car back fired hard. I looked and smoke was coming out of the radio that was now off. The car shut off and i coasted to the side of the road. I tried to restart it and it back fired a couple times as it tried to start but never got going again. Just one mile from the house and I had to have it towed. It has a non original 383 in it. To start it you turn the key and you can hear the fuel pump mounted over the rear axel turn on and then you press a button in the console to start it. When I turn the key now the pump doesnt even make a sound. Any ideas off hand from anyone?

Well it sounds like a short to me. Perhaps a hot wire has grounded out in the dash or god forbid the voltage reg has crapped out and allowed big juice through the system to cook wires. Keep us posted man. We'll help ya if we can.

That sucks!!
It sounds like the radio shorted and blew out a fuse that shared the same hook up as the electric fuel pump.
The back fire you heard was from a lean condition (no gas)
Look for the radio fuse in your fuse box and pull it out. Check it.
The fuel pump should be wired directly to the accessory terminal with an inline fuse.
It sounds like your ignition system is already been trough some "shorts" if you have to press a button to start it.
Let us know what you found or need more help!!!
