Engine Id

Trying to id the engine in a 1969 Charger.The vin#XP29H9B199208 says it is a 383 on the decode site's I've used.I do not think it is.I can anwser questions about a gm but am very unfamiliar with Mopar #'s.The engine and auto trans are in the car.It is a 2barrel engine.

There is a casting number(s) on the passenger side of the block. In there it will tell you what motor it is and build/casting date. If you want, you are more than welcome to post them up here and someone will break them down for you.

Big Blocks have a machined surface on the block behind the water pump. On RBs 440-413-426-383 this is horizontle,In a LB 350-361-383-400 this will be angled about 45 degrees. This surface will be stamped. Early engines use a 2 digit code (41=413 42=426) later motors are stamped with engine size 383,383HP(440,440HP,440HP2)

A poor picture: The low block pad is on the flat protrusion on the pass. side that mates to the water pump. The RB (long stroke, raised block, 413 and larger is a horizontal rectangular pad that is "built into" the strip where the valley pan bolts down:



In the photo below, the pad is visible directly above the top water pump bolt on the driver's side, and directly to the driver's side of the distributor clamp
