727 Problems?

I have a 74 barracuda with a 360/ 727 combo. the problem i have is when i put the car in drive or reverse the car wants to die. If i quickly shift in to drive or reverse and quick get on the gas i can keep it running. It seems like the car want to take off as soon as it is in gear. Could this be a bad torque converter? The car idles at 1000-1100 rpm and does have a manuel valve body in it. any help would be great!

It's not the trans. Sounds like a vacuum leak or something with the idle mixture or even the timing. You didn't give a lot of info, we're just guessing. If the motor is really "built" you might need a higher stall converter to get it into it's power band.
