TF 727 problems
TF 727 problems
Hello all. I recently matched a 4.0 six cylinder to a TF 727 with a CR10L converter in a Jeep Wrangler. The 727 had milky fluid so I decided to rebuild it myself with the help of a video. I went step by step with the video, but now that it's all in, the transmission seems to have very little power. This morning, I put it into gear and it didn't go anywhere, I even let it sit in drive for a couple of minutes and still nothing. An hour later, I tried it again and it moved but still very slow. The transmission is supposed to be out of an old Grand Wagoneer. I got a Transgo TF1 shift kit to put into it, but I'm not sure if I even want to mess with it again. Any ideas what I might check?
Thanks for any help!

I put them back in exactly as they came out and according to the video. With that being said, of course I could have made a mistake, but I took my time and as much care as I could.
Not to sounds stupid but are you sure that the shifter linkage is working properly? You are going from a slide shifter to a rotating shift on the tranny (as long as the tranny you pulled out was an auto as well). It sounds like you are not getting enough, or any, fluid pressure though. How much did the rebuild actually rebuild? Did you install a new convertor and flush out the lines and cooler?
New Converter and added lines, the transmission I got didn't come with the lines. Installed a new B&M shifter, the Jeep had a manual before. Is it possible the pump could be bad? I'm going to pull a cooler line this morning and see if it's pumping. I read that somewhere else on here. How fast should it pump?
It could be that the pump it not pumping any or enough fluid. It could also be that the valve body. Did you use the old pump? Did you tear it down and clean it out or did you get a new one? What about the valvebody, did you tear that down and rebuild that as well or did you get a new one?
I understand, I'm just trying to figure out if soething got put together wrong or if its soething else. I would check the line pressure, although I am not sure what it should be at. I'm sure that one of the other guys here can tell you that.
Do pumps go bad often? There is a possibility that I put something together wrong. I've never messed with one before but I did try my best to take it step by step according to the video. WHich line is the one that pumps? The one to the front of the transmission or the one to the rear?
I think I might be better off just taking it to a shop. I may be in over my head on this one. Plus, right now I think I only have one problem, if I go to messing with it I may create more problems.
Thanks for the help

Well whatever shop you take it too, make sure that its a good tranny shop. There are shops out there that work on everything and some that work on just trannys.

Man, I sure feel like a goob. Found the problem. Followed the video a little too closely. It says put four quarts in, start it up and add a fifth. Well, that still leaves you 3 quarts low. This tranny holds 8 1/2 quarts bone dry. She runs like a champ now. Thanks all, I am sorry to bother you will something so simple. So you know, I did check the fluid right after I started it up and added the fifth quart, but it was in Park and at the time I didn't know that the converter didn't fill in park. Plus, the drums and all probably didn't have any fluid in them at the time either.
I just wanted to update so you all knew what I found out.
Thanks,
Randy

So after 8 1/2 qts and being in drive, what does the dipstick read?
What I found in the rebuild manual I used said 6 qts if bone dry, plus the qt or so you put in the converter before you put it on. Just want to confirm before I do it this weekend.

My wife and I wheeled the crap out of the Jeep with the newly installed 4.0 and TF727 a couple of weeks ago. It's amazing the difference between a manual and an automatic.
Appreciate the help everyone!

i miss my 5 speed i had in my ranger I learned on that truck and drove it for over 8 years and it finally burned after 315000 miles. my fifth ave is the first automatic ive ever drove and i still cant get used to it. i put a sewing machine pedal on the floor and stuck a stick between the seats because my feet and hand become restless. the auto is nice for cruising but doesnt put the power down as well and i cant seem to control it in snow as good.

It does allow a really good laugh afterwards though.
Glad it worked out for you Randy. The autos are nice when wheeling because you have quicker shifts, if you need to shift and you can keep both hands on the wheel.
