idle problems?

I have a 74 barracuda with a 360/727. it has a holley 750 double pumper, msd ignition, troker II intake and headers. I am not sure what size cam, but it does sound like it was replaced with a performance cam at some time.

I was trying to set the idle mixture screws on the carb. The car is in neutral. it idles at 900- 1000 rpm's. I have a vacuum gauge hooked up and i was reading around 10 in vac ( the needle does bounce around a bit). i started at 2 turns out on all 4 idle mix screws. i have found that the car runs best at 1/2 turn out, that shows around 11 in vac. This seems odd that is runs best at 1/2 turn out. Could there be some other problem that i need to look at? the carb does have a small hole drilled in each of the primary throttle blades. The carb has 72 main jets, 80 sec jets and a 5.5 Power valve. timing is set at 4 degrees advance, with no vac advance on the distributor.

Any help would be great.

Unless your power valve is blown, sounds about right. Rickr might ne able to help a little more.

BTW - what's your initial and total timing and what does the idel drop to in gear?

When i put the car is gear it drops to about 750 rpm but i have to get on the gas to keep it alive. the vacuum drops to about 6 in vac. the base timing is set at 4 degrees advance and i am not sure what the total advance is at, i will have to check it when i get my car back from the body man.
