Just bought a 73 Charger SE!

So I just picked up a 73 Charger with no motor, just a 727 tranny. I am very new to this so I have a very broad question: Which motors will fit in this car? I've looked at so many and I don't want to just buy a motor and rebuild it for it not to drop in and fit. I'm no good with body alterations so I do not want to change anything in the engine bay to fit in a different motor. If I could just get a list of engines that will fit in this car I'd be so happy. Thank you so much!

Welcome to the forum! Any motor will fit the engine bay, if you want to use the tranny that came with it, you will need to know if the tranny is a big or small block one.check the transmission number. The 5th digit in the V.I.N. will tell you which motor came in it from the factory.

have fun, john

Hello all (this is my first post),

I owned a '73 Charger and Jamlpr is correct, any motor will fit. My Charger had a 318 originally, I changed it to a 440 with no issues whatsoever (motor mounts needed a little massaging but that's it).

Heavy car tho, so no substitution for cubic inches...

Good luck,
Sal C

I keep finding 440s pulled from motor homes and I was told they can't go in because they are industrial. Anything behind this?

I was also wondering a year range for the car, if anyone knows. Like which year motors can I look at?

I also found a 500 from a 74 cadillac eldorado and was wondering if that would be a fit. I have a big block 727 transmission.

the motor home 440s may have diff heads than a car engine. but WILL have a diff ext manifold. and will have diff cam, valves, oil pan. but can be put in a car, you just have to research the details. the cars used the 413 in cars thru 1965 at 10:1 C.R. and used the 413 in motor homes thru 72-73 apox with 7:1 CR. my dad used MH 413 pistons in a 65 car engine. was a bolt in. ran great.

Most of the 70's 440 motor home engine blocks are perfect for rebuilds
