I've got a "black" ignition control box on my Mopar electronic ignition. I can't seem to find this color of box anywhere to i.d. the application level. I've seen orange & chrome boxes, each for different performance levels, but I can't seem to find a Black box. Anyone identifiy this ?

It's the OEM / factory ECU and not the HP Orange or Silver box.

If I had to guess, it's a new manufacture OEM - type replacement, or someone took a spray can to it

Color does not matter, unless the "color" was by someone that built a "true" box, IE Mopar/ Mopar Performance, IE "orange box."

I've seen some pretty cheap IE Chineseo chrome/ black/ no name boxes

The BIG thing that DOES matter is whether they are so called 4 or 5 terminal ECU

A 4 terminal ECU can work with EITHER a 2 or 4 pin ballast resistor

A 5 terminal ECU MUST have a 4 terminal ballast resistor

Other than that, they pretty much all interchange as far as running the car, disregarding quality or performance

A 4 pin box MAY (probably?) has 5 pins. So how do you know? Use an ohmeter on the 5th terminal, turn the probes around and check both to the box case and the other terminals. If it shows a good open on all checks, it's a 4 terminal box

Be aware that this layout is looking down at the top of the box. Some diagrams you may find are looking INTO the connector plug

 

Definitely not spray bombed......did you see the attached pic on my last post? Not good at adding pics ....had to use the "attachment" button. Shuldn't there be some part #s on it for i.d.?
